Indian MPs Might Soon Get A 100 Percent Salary Hike

Members of Parliament just might be getting a whopping 100 percent salary hike. Their basic pay, which is currently 50,000 INR per month, might be raised to one lakh rupees a month. The PMO (Prime Minister’s Office ) is believed to be considering a recommendation to increase salaries of MPs proposed by the Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament.

TOI reported that along with the salaries, the allowances of MPs might also be revised. It is believed that the president and governor’s salaries might be revised too. Currently, the Indian president’s salary is Rs 1.5 lakh a month and the revised salary could go up to Rs 5 lakh a month, while the governor’s salary could be revised to Rs 2.5 lakh from Rs 1.10 lakh a month.

The committee, headed by BJP’s Yogi Adityanath, had suggested the hike sometime back and it had found support from the opposition too. NDTV had quoted Congress’ Ghulam Nabi Azad, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, saying, ‘I support my friend from the opposition, especially on the issue of conduct of MPs. Inflation affects everyone, MPs are also hit.’
