Know Your Artist: Patrick Watson Is A Music Experiment Gone Right


Patrick Watson is originally the name of a Canadian Singer-Songwriter From Montreal, Quebec. He used to sing in local church choirs as a boy. He sang and played the keyboards in the band ‘Gangster Politics’ in high school. He left the band as soon as he graduated and began to explore other types of music, including electronica and ambient.

He released ‘Waterproof9’ in 2001, an experimental music accompaniment to a photo book by Brigitte Henry titled Waterproof. In 2002, he decided to start a pop group namely the ‘Patrick Watson’ as we know it today, bringing together bassist Mishka Stein, drummer Robbie Kuster and former Gangster Politics guitarist Simon Angell. The group began performing around Canada and even released ‘Just Another Ordinary Day’ independently. They also performed  at the 2005 Pop Montreal Festival, a show that led to the formation of Secret City Records, the label that issued Watson's sophomore album

Watson's third album, ‘Wooden Arms’ which released in spring 2009, and was nominated for that year's Polaris Music Prize and ‘Adventures in Your Own Backyard’ followed in 2012. In the September of 2013, Watson created a T-shirt for the ‘Yellow Bird Project’ to raise money for Cape Farewell, an organization that aims to inhibit cultural awareness on climate change. ‘Love Songs for Robots’ arrived 3 years later in the spring of 2015.

The band has been compared to Rufus Wainwright, Andrew Bird, Nick Drake, and Pink Floyd for its experimental musicianship.
