For the past few weeks, almost everyone was talking about the ‘big fat Indian wedding’ of Janardhan Reddy’s daughter that probably cost more than the epic movie, Baahubali. This is the kind of wedding that we can’t even imagine in our wildest dreams. However, things don’t seem to be good for the mining baron as the Income Tax department on Monday conducted raids in his offices in Bellary, Karnataka.

Reddy is facing charges of corruption over alleged illegal iron ore mining and the companies include Obulapuram Mining Company and Associated Mining Company, through which he conducted his iron ore mining business. “Departmental action is ongoing,” said one of the officials from the I-T department. Given the huge sum of money he spent on the money, this move does not come as a surprise. 

Reddy in fact, attracted a lot of criticism for the wedding, especially after the sudden demonetization imposed by the government. People were enraged since they were struggling to get cash from the banks and ATMs, while Reddy was making headlines every now and then for the Rs. 500 crore wedding.

In fact, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that it was for the I-T department to take this issue of organizing the grand wedding despite his property being involved in a corruption case. Since January 2015, Reddy has been out on bail on the Supreme Court’s direction and was allowed to visit the district last month from November 1 to 21 for his daughter’s wedding. Earlier, he was denied permission since concerns were raised that he might influence witnesses in ongoing cases.  

Looks like the Income Tax department is doing some actual good!
