Disney Struggles to Find Stars for Its Live-Action Aladdin Remake Fans Suggest Desi Actors And Rightly So

In a whole new world of live-action adaptations in the works, including ‘The Lion King' and ‘Mulan', Disney just recently added ‘Aladdin' to the list. The studio and ‘Aladdin' director Guy Ritchie launched a global casting call in March to find the right stars for the musical based on the hit 1992 animated film about a street kid who teams with a genie to woo the princess Jasmine.

According to the casting call, the shoot will begin this month, with filming to take place in London between July 2017 and January 2018. Reports from The Hollywood Reporter says, "finding a male lead in his 20s who can act and sing has proven difficult — especially since the studio wants someone of Middle Eastern or Indian descent.”

When Indian fans got hold of the news, they couldn't help nagging them with tweets calling out to cast Bollywood actors as the oh-so-obvious-choice, making it quite clear the no tolerance policy of white-washing.

Not just that, they also have suggestions for Jasmine.

Taking inspiration From Disney's ‘Khoobsurat', Fawad Khan fans were quick to join the line for the throne.

If this man is not a prince, then no man is. And yes, I take it very personally that Fawad isn't already the Alladin. NOT COOL Disney. pic.twitter.com/XiUBWRVsJ4

Of course, among them were some intelligent ones to point out that casting an Indian would be inappropriate as Aladdin is a Middle Eastern character.

But it's pretty clear that no one will take this crazy Hollywood shit. (pssst, shit refers to white-washing here)
