Former Indian cricketer turned analyst, Ajay Jadeja has questioned the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for their move to call up Mahendra Singh Dhoni to become the mentor for the Indian cricket team ahead of T20 World Cup 2021Β which is scheduled to take place in October in the United Arab Emirates.
Talking on the Sony Sports Network, Jadeja gave numerous reasons for why he was unable to wrap his head around the Indian cricket board’s decision to make such a big exception for the former Indian skipper in MS Dhoni and bringing him onboard as the mentor despite an exceptional coaching staff working alongside the Men in Blue and a very capable captain in Virat Kohli.
Mr. @msdhoni will join #TeamIndia for the upcoming #T20WorldCup as a mentor.

"It is impossible for me to understand. I am thinking for two days about what could be the thinking. I am not talking of MS Dhoni, the understanding he has or how useful he can be, I am not going towards that. It was like you sent Ravindra ahead of Ajinkya, the person thinks why it has been done," the 50-year old said.
However, Jadeja also clarified that he was one of the biggest fans of Dhoni and appreciates whatever he did for the team and the country before he decided to hang his boots back in August 2020.

"I am surprised. There is no fan bigger than me of MS Dhoni. I believe MS Dhoni was the first captain who made the next captain before leaving or they used to always keep changing whenever they wanted," he added.
Having said that, Jadeja also raised a very valid point in saying that the Men in Blue have Ravi Shastri as their coach and it further makes his scratch his head why would the BCCI feel the need to have another helping hand in Dhoni as the mentor.

"There is a coach who has taken the team to world No.1, what happened overnight that a mentor was required? That thinking is surprising me a little," he said.
It was under Shastri’s guidance that Team India achieved exceptional feats such as winning Test series on Australian soil for two years in a row, qualifying for the World Test Championship final and were also on the verge of winning their first Test series in England before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the fifth match in Manchester.

However, in a report shared by The Indian Express, an anonymous BCCI official has mentioned the very reason behind BCCI Secretary Jay Shah calling MS DhoniΒ to be the mentor was that Shah believed that β€˜Captain Cool’ may be the only person who can help Team India during the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been called by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to join the Indian cricket team as their mentor ahead of the T20 World Cup 2021 which is set to take place in the United Arab Emirates from October.
While many have appreciated the Indian cricket board’s decision to involve the former Indian skipper in the team’s campaign, others have questioned the reasons behind BCCI Secretary Jay Shah making the call.

However, in a report shared by The Indian Express, an anonymous BCCI official has shared a very simple and basic reason why Shah called Dhoni for the tournament - because he believes that the Ranchi-born is the only person who can help Virat Kohli and the Men in Blue win the cup once again.
No one can guide this Indian team better than Dhoni. He has plenty of experience and the players trust him a lot. Jay (Shah) felt that Dhoni is the only person who can help the team during the T20 World Cup, so he dialled him,” a BCCI insider was quoted as saying in the report.

Looking at the whole episode about the BCCI making such an exception with an objective eye does make sense in recent history, MS Dhoni is the only captain for the Indian cricket team to show exceptional winning records at ICC tournaments.Β
His accolades which include the T20 World Cup 2007, the World Cup 2011, Asia Cups 2010 and 2016 and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, make an exceptional portfolio for him to β€œmentor” the team, especially the younger players like Rishabh Pant and new faces like Suryakumar Yadav who may be required to do what Dhoni did for his team in tough situations - finish the match.
The reunion all rishabians are waiting for, please @RishabhPant17 win this #t20worldcup2021 for your idol ms dhoni and Complete the due farewell of mahi #rishabhpant #MSDhoni pic.twitter.com/pY7gaIoW0R

Additionally, Dhoni is the kind of person who hopes to keep good relationships with everyone around him, including the Indian head coach Ravi Shastri and the active captain of the squad, Virat Kohli, who often used to go to Mahi for DRS reviews of other important problems that required decision-making back when Dhoni was still playing for his country.
Yes, there are still a few who feel that if India does end up winning the T20 World Cup, all the credit will go in Dhoni’s pockets but jumping the gun may be the worst mistake we can make. For the others, just to watch three of the living legends of the team in Dhoni, Kohli and Rohit Sharma to reunite is nothing short of a dream come true.
