With the third Test between India and England starting from August 25, 2021 at the Headingley Carnegie in Leeds, a lot of conversation is taking place about the kind of falling out the two sides had during the second Test match at Lordβs and how that is going to leak into the upcoming game.
In an online Sports Tak interview with former Indian cricketer Farokh Engineer, the subject of racism came forward, in which he was asked whether he had faced a difficult situation because of the colour of his skin and hereβs what he said:
βThey used to call us βbloody Indiansβ and used to make fun of our accent but I gave it to them back on the pitch by scoring runs and wicket-keeping and by gaining respect. Only then did Team England begin to consider βthese Indians arenβt foolsβ.β
βWe arenβt weak either, weβre also powerful. Just because they have whiter skin than us, they arenβt superior. I tried to tell them that βI am not equal to you, but we Indians are better than you. That is the image I portrayed to themβ,β he added.
Hereβs when Engineer was asked whether he sees a reflection of himself in the current captain of the Indian cricket team, Virat Kohli, whose strong words against James Anderson got picked up by the stump mics during the London Test.
This is pure theatre and we are only 2 matches in

βOh, yes,β Engineer said. βThey [the English] donβt like it because they arenβt used to getting it back. Our Indian cricketers used to keep quietβ¦ but when you give it back to them, they start respecting you. I admire Virat for that. He has been an aggressive captain, but it has to be within limits.β
βBanters continue to take place at the pitch. Sometimes it even gets a bit personal when they start talking about your colour. Back in our days, our skin colour was a big issue. Today, they canβt talk about our colour because racial comments are a very big issue and we could even sue them. But they can insult you in different ways.β
"You swearing at me again are you? This isnβt your fu***ng backyard," Kohli had barked back at Anderson during Indiaβs second innings at Lordβs. "Chirp chirp chirp. This is what old age makes you do," he added.

Once known to be one of the best cricketers to play Test and One-Day cricket of all time, Chris Cairnsβ life story is a lesson that teaches up how uncertain life can be.Β
A former captain of the New Zealand side is now completely broke, his reputation tarnished by back to back cases of spot-fixing, forced to leave his country in the scope for a second chance at life, lived in a rented apartment and is currently dealing with a severe heart attack which put him on life support until a couple of days ago.
Chris Cairnsβ Time As The Best In International CricketBetween 1989 and 2006, Cairns was at Mount Olympus of international cricket. During this time, he played 62 Tests and 215 ODIs for New Zealand and even captained the squad between 2002 and 2003.
Regarded as the third-best Test cricketer to play for the Black Caps, after Daniel Vettori and Sir Richard Hadlee, Cairns was equally brilliant in the 50-over format of the game. His unbeaten 102 against India in the final 2000 ICC Champions Trophy to bring the cup home is often called his best innings ever.
Chris Cairnsβ Retirement And DownfallAlthough phenomenal on the field, Cairnsβ career came to an end when he announced his retirement from international cricket in 2006 after injuries had taken away 55 Test appearances from him over his career across three decades.Β
Soon after he decided to sign up with the Chandigarh Lions in the defunct Indian Cricket LeagueΒ (ICL). This would eventually turn out the be the decision that would obliterate his reputation in the world of cricket for years to come.

In 2010, former chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL) alleged that Cairns was involved with match-fixing activities during his time in Chandigarh. With the social media craze on the rise, it did not take long for Modiβs word to reach all over the world like wildfire. As a result, endorsements, and commentary gigs came to a sudden halt and financial burdens began to cloud his mind.
The situation got so unpleasant that at one time Cairns had to work as a cleaner at a bus shelter in order to put food on the table for his family.Β

βHe has no choice,β his wife Melanie Crosser told a women's magazine. βWe have bills to pay like everyone else. We don't own a house, we are paying rent and getting by is a struggle.β
Spot-Fixing Cases And Short-Lived HappinessOut of job, out of money and out of options, Cairns approached the British courts to sue Modi for libel in 2012 and the verdict was even voiced in his favour. He was also awarded Β£90,000 (Rs. 80 lakh, approximately) in damages.
βToday's verdict lifts a dark cloud,' he had said after the verdict was out. βI feel great relief that I am able to walk into any cricket ground with my head held high.β
Unfortunately, Cairns did not get a lot of time to enjoy his reinstated reputation as one year later the International Cricket Council's anti-corruption unit dragged him back into the match-fixing allegations and perjury. This time around, they had multiple witnesses to make a stronger case against him.
In the list of witnesses was Lou Vincent, a former New Zealand cricketer and an admitted match fixer who said that he was ordered by Cairns to participate in match manipulation with the Chandigarh Lions.
Vinceentβs ex-wife was also presented before the court and she said that Cairns had given her the confidence that they will not get caught fixing matches as βeveryone does it in Indiaβ.
Finally, and most importantly, former teammate and Kiwi legend Brendon McCullum testified in court that Cairns had two conversations with him about match fixing in 2008.
However, Cairnsβ defense dealt with each of the witnesses. They argued that Vincent was trying to get in the good books of the ICC after being found guilty, that his ex-wife was very drunk on the night of the alleged conversation, and that McCullumβs statement was unreliable because of how long he took to report such an incident.

Once again, the verdict was in favour of Cairns but the bump he took from a second trial did not reinstate his prominence. 'Reputationally, I'm completely scorched,' he told reporters outside the court. 'Burned completely.'
Leaving New Zealand In The Hope Of A New LifeIn 2018, the Cairns family wrapped up their livelihood and moved to the Australian capital of Canberra where his wifeβs event and marketing company had to be liquidated after a failedΒ rowing regatta. More recently, Cairns was made CEO of an Australian startup that prepares sports films on a greenscreen.

Unfortunately, the former New Zealandβs plans of building a future once again came to a halt after he suffered a massive heart attack, leading to an aortic dissection β a tear in the inner layer of the body's main artery.
After the surgery, he had to be put on life support. However, a couple of days ago, it was confirmed by his lawyer that Cairns was taken off life support and had started to talk to his family members.

βChris's family and friends are heartened by the respectful and warm manner in which this terrible news has been reported and received by the public, both in New Zealand and around the world,'' he said. 'Thanks to everyone for their warm wishes, prayers, and kind words.'
βIt's unfortunate that some of the things that happened at the end of Chris's career have overshadowed everything else, but I only have good memories of him. I just hope that he still has time on his side,β the great Allan Border spoke about the misfortunes of Chris Cairns and his family.
