Two-time champions and last season’s runners-up Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) despite losing some of their star players from the previous season are currently sitting on top of the points table, winning three out of four matches in IPL 2022.

Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, the Kolkata-based outfit have made a great start to the 15th edition of the cash-rich league but they have their set of problems. Their biggest worry is their batting unit that has performed way below expectations in the opening week of the tournament.

Given that they have only one batter, Andre Russell, in the Top 20 in the leading run-scorers’ list, it’s a huge surprise that the franchise has still managed to win three matches. For that they should thank their bowling attack that has performed brilliantly so far and made things easy for them.

However, with the 10-team tournament picking up pace, winning matches would get tougher and tougher and KKR would need their batters to come to the party as well.

While the KKR supporters are delighted with their side’s overall performance so far, they also realise that their batters, including their skipper Shreyas Iyer haven’t had a great start to the tournament while the former KKR opener Shubam Gill has been playing some of his best cricket, albeit in a different jersey.

The 22-year-old has amassed 180 runs in just three outings and his performances have given some fans a chance to have a go at the KKR management for sacrificing a talent like him for Venkatesh Iyer, for his all-round abilities.

While Gill has been firing all guns blazing, the new KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer, who was expected to fill in his boots in their batting line-up, has been really disappointing thus far. 

Whenever the Gujarat Titans opener plays a match-winning knock, the KKR fans start cursing their own franchise and questioning their auction strategy. Gill’s match-defining knock against Punjab Kings (PBKS) once again triggered the KKR supporters and they lashed out at their franchise.

One fan mocked the franchise through a hilarious meme on the micro-blogging site, which invited mixed reactions on the internet. He tickled people’s funny bones by equating KKR’s decision to release Gill and buy Shreyas Iyer in the auction to selling TV to buy remote.

Despite their obvious weakness, the good thing is that KKR have already won three matches and it should allow their batters to play with a relaxed mind, without worrying much about the result.
