This year on September 19, the city of Mexico was hit by a devastating earthquake, claiming the lives of hundreds of people. The 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the city on the anniversary of the 1985 earthquake that caused the death of over 5,000 people.
Among those who couldn't make it post the recent earthquake was a 6-year-old boy Santiago Flores Mora, who died when his school building collapsed.
After the heartbreaking incident, Santiago's mother wrote a letter to the FIFA Player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo, telling him how her son dreamed of meeting him and saw him as an inspiration.
Her letter read,
"Mr. Cristiano Ronaldo
We are writing you in pain as our son Santiago Flores Mora got trapped in Enrique Rebsamen School. He was a second-grade student, and he would have turned seven today. Our reason to get in touch with you is because he was your biggest fan, he'd write your name everywhere, and recently, he'd fill out all school notes with his name written as 'Santiago Flores Mora Cristiano Ronaldo.'"
Attached to this letter is the jersey his father bought him. He asked him to have it stamped with your name, and since he didn't do so, he kept on re-writing it with a marker as many times as he needed to.
I just wanted you to know that my son dreamed about meeting you. Now he's gone and I'm writing you in such pain, because I never thought about the love and respect he showed for you. As I dropped him off in school, he told me 'today I'll have my best football game, it will be a Clásico and I'm Cristiano Ronaldo, I'll help my team give Barca a beating. We created an email for one of his subjects. He chose the username "santycristianofm", with his password being cristianoronaldo. The way he looked up to you is unmatched. He said that, when he grew up, he'd become a history teacher like his father and a footballer, just like the best player in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo.
I don't know if you're too busy, but I just wanted to let you know that my son looked up to you as if you were his own father, there wasn't anyone he looked up to more than his father and yourself. Thanks for being who you are, because my son never ceased to look up to you."
The chances of this letter reaching Cristiano were slim, just like Santiago's mother predicted however, owing to the power of social media; Cristiano did come across the letter.
After reading it, he took to his Twitter to pay a tribute to his young fan and to send his condolences to Santiago's family.
His tweet included a picture of him holding a signed jersey with the message:
"For my No. 1 fan Santiago. With love, Cristiano Ronaldo."
The picture was accompanied with a heartfelt message in Spanish.
En este momento de dolor, envío a la familia de Santiago y a todas las familias que han perdido sus seres queridos un enorme abrazo. pic.twitter.com/odD28aFPfv— Cristiano Ronaldo (@Cristiano) September 24, 2017
The tweet translates to:
"At this time of sorrow, I send the Santiago family and all the families who have lost loved ones a huge hug."
The footballer previously tweeted a message for the citizens of Mexico when the city was struck by the earthquake.
His tweet read, “A very strong and supportive hug for Mexico”
Un abrazo muy fuerte y solidario para Mexico pic.twitter.com/Jr9FBdEI95— Cristiano Ronaldo (@Cristiano) September 20, 2017
Its gestures like these that make us respect Cristiano Ronaldo even more and prove that he truly is a great idol. We hope that his message reaches Santiago's parents and it helps them in some way or the other.
