ISLAMABAD: Pakistan rejected on Tuesday a move by the Indian government to hold talks with Hurriyat leaders in Indian-occupied Kashmir, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The statement read that India does not appear to be ?sincere and realistic? in its endeavours to improve the conditions of IoK.

However, the Foreign Office (FO) pointed out that the new measure shows that India realises the "futility of the use of force and the indispensability of dialogue".

On Monday, India appointed former Intelligence Bureau chief Dineshwar Sharma as centre?s special representative in Jammu and Kashmir, about 25 years after his posting in Kashmir.

Indian media reported that Sharma?s task is to ?initiate a sustained interaction and dialogue? for peace in the valley as well as understand the legitimate aspirations of a cross-section of the society in the state including the Hurriyat.

The FO statement also remarked that ?meaningful and result-oriented dialogue" is only possible between India and Hurriyat leadership if Pakistan is part of it.

"Without the participation of the Hurriyat leadership, no interaction or dialogue would carry any weight or meaning," the statement said.

FO claimed that India has appointed the new interlocutor seeking to understand the plight and aspirations of the Kashmiris. However, their aspirations have been known since the last 70 years, which is right to self-determination, according to the statement.

According to FO, there is a need to eliminate state-sponsored terrorism in IoK as well as hold peace talks to resolve the issue.

The statement added, ?this [is] imperative for ensuring durable and sustainable peace and stability in South Asia.".

It further said: "Pakistan [wishes] that the international community would play its rightful role in facilitating such an outcome."
