Meet Darshan Yewalekar — Mr. D-Shave — the man who is responsible for some of the dopest Ranveer Singh hairstyles ever. What are you up to right now?
Just finished working on the mammoth, 'Padmavati' where Ranveer is playing 'Allaudin Khilji'. It was possibly the most exciting project of my life, where we got to play with hair and build upon his boss-ass beard.
How has it been collaborating with Ranveer on multiple projects—red carpet, magazine shoots, movies? How different is each process?
It's been almost 4 years now working with Ranveer across all platforms — red carpet, magazine, movies etc. Each has their own pros and cons. We consider everything from the mood of the shoot to the clothes and sometimes the location as well. A red carpet event is often classic unless Ranveer decides to wear a bathrobe to it.
Magazine editorials are usually experimental, creative and fun.

Styling a movie is often a tricky proposition. It starts with understanding the character and spending time on research to create last-minute details that help enhance the look. Then you get to something called a Look Test where you creatively collaborate with the director to freeze the final look. Once we go on the floor, we have to make sure the hair is in continuity across the entire film, unless there's a drastic shift.

How does Ranveer maintain his grown-up beard?
The most critical part is the get the shape right and consistent because it helps support the character of the film. Trimming it regularly helps keep the beard in good shape.
Let's talk about your beard now. How do you maintain your beard?
It took me almost 2 years to get this luscious and fully-grown Boss-ass beard. All I can say that patience is key in the entire process. Also, I have discovered this amazing shampoo that keeps my beard healthy and shiny. During peak winter — when the weather is dry, I add a beard oil to my routine.

One difference between working on a set and working in real life?
A set is more in control and we have a chance to do a retake. In real life, it's more important to create a style that is easy for clients to maintain on a daily basis.

Wacky hair colours—yay or nay?
It's subjective. I feel color should always compliment the haircut, skin tone and personality of a person.
