According to Business Insider, BlackBerry managed to sell only 200,000 phones last year and it virtually means they sold absolutely nothing. BlackBerry was a leader in smartphone sales not so long ago; however, this is not the case today. BlackBerry’s sales made up 0% or 0.0482 to be precise, in the last quarter of 2016. 

Business Insider managed to spot the stat in the report from research firm, Gartner. In the fourth quarter of 2016 alone, more than 432 million smartphones were sold all over the world, out of which BlackBerry only managed to sell 207,900 units that were running Blackberry’s native operating system. 

When compared to giants like Apple and Google, BlackBerry’s market share is almost negligible. In the same quarter of 2016, Apple sold 77 million units as compared to 352.7 million units running Google’s Android operating system.

However, BlackBerry devices using the Android operating system are not included in the figures but the fact that BlackBerry’s endeavours to sell a successful smartphone are all but dead.

Google enjoys high volumes of sales simply because Google gives their operating system to smartphone manufacturers for free and most of these manufacturers operate in countries like India and China where low-cost handset sales are always hitting the roof. Apple’s strategy to keep prices high and selling their phones at a premium helps them maximise their profits. This is partly because Apple does not share its operating system with any other manufacturer, giving them the advantage of exclusivity and full control of their brand image.
