A few days ago, noted actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui was summoned by the Thane Police over the Call Detail Record scam and since then a string of similar affairs have sprouted in Bollywood over this illegal acquisition of private information, which is recorded by different telephone exchanges.

Nawazuddin's lawyer Rizwan Siddiqui is currently in the Thane Crime Branch custody for allegedly sourcing the CDR of Nawazuddin Siddiqui's wife, Aaliya Siddiqui. Now, former model and actor Ayesha Shroff, who's also Jackie Shroff's wife, is also under the radar of the investigating team. It is being alleged that she had illegally sourced the CDR of actor Sahil Khan, with whom she allegedly had a dispute.

According to the police, Ayesha Shroff and Sahil Khan had a dispute a few years back, following which Ayesha allegedly sourced his CDR. She claims that he was a business partner who cheated her of Rs 8 crore. On the other hand, Sahil said that he was in a relationship with Ayesha and had spent the money only on her. Later, both of them withdrew their cases against each other in 2015, mutually agreed to shut down their company and not harm each other's reputation thereafter.

This is what Nitin Thakare, Senior Police Inspector, Thane Crime Branch has to say on the subject, “The two were involved in a dispute and she allegedly sourced the CDR of the actor and handed it to her counsel Rizwan Siddiqui.”

CDR is basically a data record produced by a telephone exchange or other telecommunications equipment, that documents the details of a telephone call or other telecommunications transaction that passes through that facility or device.

These records are critical to the production of revenue and for law enforcement as well. Such information helps to identify suspects, in that they can reveal details as to an individual's relationships with associates, communication and behavior patterns, and even location data that can establish the whereabouts of an individual during the entirety of the call.

These are some of the basic data points that are recorded but it does not include the content of that transaction. It could be the phone number of the subscriber originating the call, the phone number receiving the call, the starting time of the call (date and time) the call duration etc.

Well, for keeping the privacy of the user, the telephone exchange companies are made to comply by certain rules and regulations where they cannot share anyone's personal data(that could lead to the abuse of information) with anyone and everyone, except for investigation purpose for police or any such authority.

We all are also aware of Kangana Ranaut having a public spat with Hrithik Roshan over an alleged affair for some time now, and now her name has also come to the light as well.

Nitin Thakare said, “We are investigating it, the mobile number was of Hrithik Roshan and the message was sent by actress Kangana to lawyer Rizwan who represented her. We are not sure if Hrithik's CDR was procured illegally. The matter is under investigation.”

The complete retention of metadata is already a subject of debate in many countries including the United States and Germany and in many other European countries as well, and the recent case of Facebook privacy scandal is acting just like pouring oil on the flame.
