Dabbawalas Feeding 1000 Poor People During The Rains Proves Nothing Can Wash Away Mumbai's Spirit

Thanks to the relentless rains, things are only getting tougher for Mumbaikars with each passing day. The incessant rains, which don't seem to stop anytime soon, have created all sorts of problems possible in the city – water-logged roads, heavy traffic jams, accidents and fire emergencies, flooded train tracks and giant potholes and craters on the road.

In fact, because of the heavy rains and the bridge that collapsed at Andheri station, even the dabbawalas' services came to a halt. According to a report in The Times Of India, Mumbai Dabbawalas' Association's spokesperson Subhash Talekar said, “As soon as we learned that services were suspended between Churchgate and Virar around 7.30 am, we sent out messages to our boys to halt collection of tiffins from homes. Those who had done so were told to return them. Otherwise, the food would have got spoilt, as there was no way of making deliveries.”

However, when half of Mumbai came to a halt, the dabbawalas did not forget their duty of feeding people. In fact, they came forward to help people from the financially weaker section.

The Mumbai dabbawalas fed over 1000 poor people. The dabbawalas have an initiative called 'Roti Bank' which was initiated last year. Reportedly, due to the rains and transport problems, a program that was being held in a hall got cancelled and food for as many 1000 people was left. So they decided to pick that food and give it to the poor.
