We Finally Know Whether Leo DiCaprio Was Dreaming Or Not At The End Of 'Inception'

More often than not, the endings of Leonardo DiCaprio movies need some more explanation and context, be it confusion or just anger. One such movie is obviously 'Titanic' with the age-old claim that there was enough space for both of them on that door.

Special mention – the twisted ending of 'Shutter Island'.

But, probably the most confusing ending belongs to the even more confusing movie 'Inception'. Was it a dream or reality? Did Cobb finally go back to his family or did he just dream about that in the end? These are some questions that have been left unanswered for almost a decade and we may have finally gotten the answer.

Let's just get a little background before we proceed to the ending. The movie basically follows a bunch of people who specialize in stealing information from someone's mind through their dreams. But, since that wasn't difficult and weird enough, they are then supposed to actually plant an idea in a powerful businessman's mind and as you know, things don't really go exactly as they were planned.

Since it's so easy for the lines between reality and dreams to become blurred, Leo's character uses a spinning top – fully aware that it spins forever in a dream but would topple if the situation is reality. In the end, though, we can see the top as it clearly kept spinning and the possibility of a happy ending becoming unclear.

The mind-bending masterpiece of a movie by none other than Christopher Nolan came out eight years ago but that ending has never given us any proper answers. The supposed cliff-hanger is frustrating to say the least, but Michael Caine has finally cleared up some doubts.

The actor gave everyone a little behind-the-scenes intel while attending the screening of the movie in London. “When I got the script of Inception, I was a bit puzzled by it, and I said to him, 'I don't understand where the dream is,'” Caine explained.

He went on, “I said, 'When is it the dream and when is it reality?' He said, 'Well, when you're in the scene it's reality.' So, get that — if I'm in it, it's reality. If I'm not in it, it's a dream.”

That's actually a good point which makes things so much easier. Let's go back to that ending once again with this newfound information, shall we?

Michael Caine may have been missing from most of the movie but he was in that ending scene, so if we're going by his explanation, the happy ending was real and Leo finally went back home to his kids!
