New York City Honours Waris Ahluwalia By Declaring A Day Named After Him

Waris Ahluwalia’s lustrous resume just got better. Actually, a lot better!

How many designers or actors out there can boast of a day named after them? Not many. But Waris Ahluwalia can.  The Mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, declared October 19th as ‘Waris Ahluwalia Day’ to recognise his efforts to counter religious intolerance. The honour was conferred at the Mayor’s official residence.

Waris took to Instagram to express his gratitude and wrote “I had a dream last night that the @nycmayor proclaimed the day as 'Waris Ahluwalia Day'. Thank you Mr. Mayor for this incredible honor. I will continue to uphold the values of this magnificent metropolis I call home”.

Waris Ahluwalia is a well known jewellery designer and creates fine jewellery under his label titled ‘House of Waris’. He has also held a fashion exhibition in 2011 as a part of New York Fashion Week where he exhibited his line of cashmere and silk scarves.

It is to be noted that New York-based Waris was denied boarding an AeroMexico flight bound for New York from Mexico City only because of his turban. The airline later apologised.
