Around the 13th century, the village of Kuldhara prospered with a rich lineage of Paliwal Brahmins. It is around 18 kms away from Jaisalmer and currently under the surveillance of the ASI. However, this abandoned village wasnโt always a barren land. ย Legend has it, that this land was cursed and shall stay this way forever.

The story finds its root in the evil doings of Salim Singh, who was once a tax collector in this village. He fell in love with the daughter of the chief of the village and was willing to go to any extent to have his wish granted. He threatened the villagers of dire consequences if he didnโt get the woman. On that same night, thousands of villagers, from approximately 84 villages around Kuldhara, fled the place. The eerie part is that no one saw or heard them leave and the whereabouts of the Paliwal Brahmins and where they eventually resettled was never found.

The houses are still in decent shape as they were back in the 1800โs. The abandoned village is neat and people who have managed to spend a night here, out of the need for sheer adventure, have experienced the presence of paranormal activities. The villagers around the area believe that the village is haunted and is still guarded by the ghosts of the Paliwal Brahmins who fled it.ย
If you happen to land here on an adventure trip, you will find people warning you of unusual sightings and experiences if you overstay your welcome. The rich fact about history is that it is intriguing and feeds on the beliefs and information that is left behind. Rajasthan is a land of rich folklore and with innumerable palaces and forts, the number of eerie tales attached to the state are also plenty.
