At the very start of her career, Nushratt BharucchaΒ had no idea if her stint in Bollywood would turn out to be fruitful one. Her parents didnβt want her to act in the movies but as fate had it, she did step into the world of glamour.Β
It was just a random call for an audition that got her a role in the TV serial Kitty Party.Β
After a few months, she left the show and stepped into the world of the big screen. It was Dibakar Banerjeeβs dark movie Love *** Aur Dhokha where people noticed her talent, but it was the role of a nagging girlfriend in movies like Pyaar Ka Punchama and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety that finally made her a big name in the industry.Β

She carried the baggage of the tag of a 'gold digger' that came along with these movies because of the slight similarity between the roles she played.Β Β
But now with Chhorii, she has broken stereotypes generalizing her and has shown the audience a different side of her as an actor.Β Β

I got a chance to talk to Nushratt about her recent movie Chhorii, how she battled depression, and much more.Β Β
Excerpts from my interview:Β Β
Nurshratt, the viewers havenβt ever seen you in this avatar. How did Chhorii happen?Β Β
Itβs one of the easiest films to come my way in a very long time for me.Β Β
I met Vikram and he told me to enter a conference hall wherein I got to meet Jack whoβs the co-producer. We started chatting about things like unemployment, poverty, and the lack of electricity in India. We also were talking about Indian weddings and how itβs a grand affair in the country.Β
We kept talking for almost two hours and I went home. The next day I got a call from Vikram and he told me about the movie he is doing with Jack. They both liked me for this part. It was just one phone call and I was doing Chhorii.Β Β

Are you a fan of the horror genre and do you get scared easily?Β Β
I am a huge fan but I am the biggest βphattuβ on this planet.Β Β
I remember I was watching Insidious Part 2 in a theatre and somebody who knew me was sitting inside the theatre but I had no idea about it. I was screaming at certain scenes and in the interval, he came all the way to my chair and said that βI knew you were hereβ.Β Β
I saw Vicky Kaushalβs Bhoot and the whole row next to me kept looking at me because I was screaming.Β Β
Were you scared while shooting for the film and felt that you canβt do a particular scene?Β Β
For this movie, Sakshiβs fear is coupled with a lot of emotional conflict and turmoil. The fear was not about the paranormal activity but it was about surviving.Β
She has an eight-month baby in her womb whose life is far more important to her than her own. She has to fight it for the child. On an everyday basis, my dominating fear was just about protecting the child. I was so engrossed with all of this that fear was more situational than internal.Β

You have been in the industry for years now and do you feel that you have finally made a mark?Β Β
I donβt feel this is finally βitβ. I have been doing this for far too many years and every day, I got to sets and that moment for me is everything.Β Β
People will either say 'she has done a good job' or a 'bad job'. I donβt think thereβs a single shot in my career wherein I am like βchalegaβ. It just does not work like that for me. I canβt go home like that. I will shoot for two more hours to get that shot perfectly. I will continue working and I will be happy.Β Β
Now, we are getting to see a different side of you as an actor but when you started with Pyaar Ka Punchama, people made a perception about you and thought you are a gold digger. Has it ever happened people have reached out thinking you are a particular type of a person because of those roles you have done in the past?Β Β
A lot of people believed that I am that kind of a girl and I donβt know why. People who, through the extension of my friends, knew me also made this perception about me.Β Β
If someone plays the role of murderer, kya wo actually mein khuni ban jaega? Aisa nahi hota. I guess thatβs the niceness of the character and the movie that viewers connected to it and thought Nushratt is like that.Β Β
A while back, you opened up about how you were battling depression and it was really hard for you. Now that the dark past is over, how do you see it now?Β
I have started to see a larger picture of life now which I couldnβt do back then. The reason it got that dark for me was that I couldnβt see hope and couldnβt see a way out of it. The larger picture keeps me content.Β I now think why did I get affected?Β
The first lockdown that happened last year also gave us a bit of sanity. I have no help in the house. Itβs my dad, mom, and dadi who all are senior citizens. I was the only person in the house who could take charge.Β
I would get up in the morning to do all the household chores and at the night, I would choose a movie and get all my family members together in a room and go to sleep. I did the same for good 7 months. I did not have time to chat with people on the phone because I didnβt have time.Β
I realized that life is about living for people who care for you. Anything above all this is just a bonus. I have not been this content in life as I was in those 7 months.Β

We have been talking about the lockdown and how it helped you overcome your depression. For MensXP this year, the theme of International Men's Day was how masculinity has changed in the past two years. Do you think there are any positive changes in men around you?Β
I think men have changed in a longer time than in just two years.Β Β
For me, I have seen my father holding my motherβs purse so, itβs normal for me. My father has been helping my mom with domestic chores even before I was born. I feel like I have stayed in an environment where everything is equally divided. Itβs normal for me.Β Β
The men in my life are the best versions of masculinity I have seen. Itβs always been a two-way street and they have been equally responsible for the house and they have contributed equally as women in the house did.Β Β
I am the only daughter and no one has asserted any right on me. I wouldnβt see a change up close.Β Β
Coming back to Chhorii, the title in itself is very interesting. What are your thoughts about it?Β Β
When I heard the title, I found it just perfect. The Marathi title is Lapachhapi and we wanted a different one for this movie. When you will watch the movie, you will understand why this title is so much perfect for the movie.Β Β
Hereβs the trailer:Β Β
When the trailer was released, I scrolled through the comments and people felt that itβs a perfect remake unlike many others in the past. How did you feel about these positive comments?Β Β
We shouldnβt shy away from making remakes if the original movies have worked well. Why not recreate it? Maybe do it more relevantly. We have tried it and I hope people like it.Β

Nushratt, you have had a tough journey in Bollywood. Can you give a few tips to struggling actors to not lose hope?Β Β
Itβs the mindset that I corrected. After every movie that I did, I felt like I will be given 10 more offers but it doesnβt happen like that. If you see someone successful and you think it will happen to you there and then, it wonβt. Please trust the universe for everything to happen.Β

When youβre the King of Bollywood, it can get rather lonely at the top.Β
When you are constantly in the public eye and are being judged all the time, it is only natural that you grow thick skin to protect yourself.Β
Bollywood legend Shah Rukh Khan has the penchant to turn any kind of negativity into love by adding his gift of wit.
SRK is known for his uncanny, humorous side and his AMAs on social media are a favourite among his fans. During his #AskSRK sessions, he usually always displays his witty side with a quick comeback.Β
Once upon a time, there were trolls spreading rumours about SRKβs sexuality and all sorts of gibberish was being written. Amidst all of this, someone straight up asked him if heβs bisexual.

According to a Telly Chakkar report, in one of the interviews, the actor cleared the air once and for all and addressed the rumours.Β Β
βThatβs rubbish. I donβt do men, I donβt do women. Iβm happily in love with my wife. Hey, I like that line from *** and the City 'Iβm try-s*xual. I try anything thatβs s*xual. Okay, Iβm try-s*xual. No, hey, cut that out.β
Shah Rukh has also been open about his thoughts around gossip mills being run by magazines that link him to his co-stars. He spoke about how his friendships were sensationalised and that led to him thinking twice before signing movies back in the day.Β Β
βThe minute I pose with a girl for a movie magazine, theyβll put a hideous signature on it. Magazines need sensationalism to sell one more, but I refuse to add to the trashβ he said.Β Β
For now, the actor will soon be seen in Pathan which also stars John Abraham and Deepika Padukone in pivotal roles.
