Bollywood, which is known for creating blockbuster movies and entertainment has also, over the years, earned a notorious reputation for creating stellar gossip among its superstars.
And if there is one person who could be single-handedly leading the A-listers into the mouth of the tiger, it is director Karan Johar, who has produced just as many movies in his career as he has controversies, courtesy his Koffee couch, which has been the source of some epic gossip over the years.
© SOL India
Having interviewed several actors, actresses, producers and directors over the span of 6 scandalous seasons, KJo was able to stir quite a few storms in the industry.
Sometimes, it became a home-ground for catfights, other times it blatantly drew a wedge between stars who were once good friends, and almost every time it churned something problematic, leaving behind a trail of misogynistic and sexist remarks.
And one, in particular, that got under my skin was where Karan Johar hosted two leading ladies on his couch - Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee. An episode that was released almost 17 years ago in 2004, was something I recently stumbled upon and boy, did it reek of prejudice.
© SOL India
Try to picture this, it is 2004, Rani Mukherjee is an already established and successful actress having given hits like Chalte Chalte, Saathiya, Yuva and many more. On the other hand, Kareena, who came in with a bang in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, has since then only delivered average successes on the box office with movies like Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon.
The two, until then, were seen together in only one film - Mujhse Dosti Karoge.
And now, they were back together, this time on a couch, propagating something even more toxic than their movies. From Kareena confessing she is dating Shahid Kapoor to Rani talking about the bone Aishwarya Rai had to pick with her, a lot of secrets were spilt.
© SOL India
You see, quite a few things irked me during the episode.
From Karan Johar calling Kareena Kapoor a ‘superstar’ almost 95 times with Rani sitting right there, who was clearly a better actress at that point of time, to how casually the three sat and objectified women as though it was NBD. Guess what? Technical problem, Mr. Raichand!
While the entire episode is full of pretence and one big cringe-fest, there is a certain segment that just comes off as plain disappointment.
It is where Karan Johar talks about a certain survey he took in the industry to find out who is sexier? Rani or Kareena? And in case you’ve started cringing already, hold that expression until you read what comes next.
© SOL India
Out of all the actors that were rallied up for this survey, from Fardeen Khan to Saif Ali Khan to John Abraham to Uday Chopra to Arjun Rampal and lots more, each one ended up objectifying the two actresses to a point that even Rani and Kareena were left speechless.
Why, you ask? It’s because the entire AV revolved around men sitting and rating both of their ‘ass’ and how cute or sexy it was…
© SOL India
While Rani was called a ‘good housewife material’, someone you’d cuddle with and take to meet one’s mom, Kareena was called someone who was ‘sexy’ and could be taken to the Maldives.
Clearly, Bollywood has been drawing inspiration from amongst itself for minting out all those problematic and chauvinistic crap in movies, where a woman in conservative clothes is Parvati and in short clothes is Poo.
© SOL India
And the worst part about the episode was that as soon as the AV ended, the two women sat and called men openly, rating their ass as a ‘wonderful’ and a ‘sweet’ gesture.
Now, while I am all open for embracing my body and taking compliments, there is a thin line between appreciating and objectifying, which was clearly crossed here.
And just like the Indian society that has been reducing women to a certain 'type' for decades, looks like Bollywood has been at it for years as well. What's worse is that not much has changed from then to now, except for maybe newer faces but none the wiser!
What would you think?

24 years ago on this day, Gulshan Kumar, the legendary founder of the T-Series music label was assassinated in Andheri West suburb in Mumbai city, which is the heart of the Bollywood film industry.
© Twitter
The murder sent shockwaves through the entire nation and outside it, especially due to the involvement of such a high profile name in it with the perpetrators of the operation to be the Mumbai underworld organization D-Company.
Popularly known as the 'Cassette King', the late Gulshan Kumar had achieved tremendous success after moving to Mumbai from the streets of Delhi earlier, manufacturing audio cassettes and then started his own label, T-Series.
© Instagram
Kumar, through his music label, introduced glorious Indian musicians like Sonu Nigam and others, however, his journey was cut short after he was murdered in cold blood following a tiff with the underworld.
Well, here are some disturbing things about his assassination that would feel like something straight out of a Bollywood film.
1. He Was Killed For Not Paying Extortion Money © iStock
We have seen so many movies where businessmen or heroes' parents get extortion threats from gangsters in order to save their lives. Well, this is quite exactly what happened with Gulshan Kumar as well.
According to reports, on August 5, 1997, Kumar had received calls from notorious gangster Abu Salem where he told him to pay extortion money.
However, after Kumar refused to pay the money demanded, just a week later on August 12, he was gunned down in Mumbai.
2. Shot By Sharpshooters. In Broad Daylight. Outside A Temple! © YouTube
Our earliest concepts of ideas around sharpshooters or assassins come from Bollywood movies, where often the hero saves the day by taking on them in a gunfight.
Gulshan Kumar, known to be a god-loving man, had been off to Jeeteshwar Mahadev Mandir in Andheri on a regular temple visit.
However, before he could make his way to his car, two sharpshooters hiding near the temple fired three bullets at him in broad daylight.
It was reported that Gulshan tried to take shelter but before he could, the assassins then fired 15 more bullets and fled. He was then rushed to the hospital but passed away en route to the hospital.
3. The People He Knew Conspired Against Him © BCCL
A lot of times, in Bollywood movies, the police or the hero does not have to go far away to investigate or take revenge for the death of a person as the people closest to him are involved in the killing.
This was similar in the murder of Gulshan Kumar as Nadeem Saifee of the Nadeem-Shravan fame, was declared as a co-conspirator in the murder.
Nadeem, who along with partner Shravan, had given everlasting music hits from movies like Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahin, Saajan, Sadak, Deewana, Phool Aur Kaante, Pardes, Raaz, and others, had been handpicked by Gulshan Kumar during Nadeem's struggling years.
However, it was later reported that a personal enmity led to Nadeem conspiring against him, resulting in the murder of the T-Series head.
At the time of the killing, Nadeem had been in London and hasn't returned to India since.
4. His Killing Was Planned Overseas In Dubai © iStock
Uusally in Bollywood movies, plans for things to happen in India are often hatched overseas. Well, this was reportedly no different.
It was alleged that the conspiracy to murder Gulshan Kumar was actually formulated in Dubai.
As per reports, the police in November of 1997, had filed a 400-page charge sheet where 26 people were accused, 15 were arrested.
The charge sheet stated that the plot to assassinate had been designed in Dubai, in the office of Dawood Ibrahim's brother, Anees.

“Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamare dil me hai, dekhna hai zor kitna baazu-e-qaatil me hai” – Ramprasad Bismil
The feeling of patriotism in its full light is yet to sink in as three days are still left for us to celebrate the 75th year of Independence. We have had many National heroes fight for the independence of our country. On 15th August 1947, India was finally free from the clutches of the British government but independence came at cost of Hindustan getting divided into India and Pakistan.
The two countries have fought many battles but none was like The Kargil War. After over three months of combat on the freezing heights of Kargil, the Indian Army got victory on July 26, 1999. Many heroes lost their lives but they reclaimed the Indian territories.

One such hero was our very own Vikram Batra. He was filmy, dramatic, full of life and his phrases still echo in our minds. Dharma Productions collaborated with director Vishnu Varadhan to narrate to us the story of the brave army officer Shershaah who relentlessly fought for the pride of his country.
We have Sidharth stepping into the shoes of Vikram Batra who has given us his career-best performance through his movie Shershaah.
After the trailer release, people had all the positive things to say about the movie and there was an overwhelming response to the fact that Shershaah will tell the story of Captain Vikram Batra. How did you feel at that moment?
MensXP got in touch with Sidharth Malhotra right before the movie release to talk about the preparations that went behind filming Shershaah . We also discussed how mentally draining was it to portray Vikram Batra and much more.
Here are excerpts from my interview:
When you put in so much effort for the character, feel so much for the story and it has taken a lot of time for it to be made, you are hoping for that kind of response. It’s been overwhelming how they have perceived the film after watching the trailer. I am just eager to know if they have a similar sort of reaction after watching the film, if not better.

Playing a real person on the screen does come with its own set of challenges. Did playing Vikram Batra add any pressure on you?
Oh yes! When you are playing a real-life character and especially someone who’s so heroic, respected by armed forces, there’s so much written about him and we have seen his interviews, there’s a pressure to portray him in the best possible way. There’s a pressure that I feel that I somewhere owe to the family, also it gives a right impression on the audience about his life, family, and his brother. All these things constantly play in your head and this is why I knew I had to put my best foot forward. It’s difficult to put someone’s entire life on the screen in just 2 hours. I hope people get inspired by his story because he gave all of it. Not just him, it’s an ode to all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives. It’s a big responsibility and I feel proud that I got to wear his uniform on the screen.
© Amazon Prime Video
As you said you owe to the family of Vikram Batra, how did his parents and brother react to the glimpses of the movie?
Captain Vikram Batra’s parents and the rest of his family haven’t seen the film yet. It’s his brother Vishal who has watched a few glimpses of the movie and he was extremely sweet. For him, it was an emotional process to watch the film. He is someone with whom I have interacted many times over these years regarding his brother’s life story. He was extremely emotional when he told me that ‘Sid, I have only seen my brother when he’s off duty and I have no visuals of him fighting in Kargil. After seeing the film, I see you as for him'. He addresses me as ‘bhai’ and ‘bro’. I can’t see Shershaah as a commercial movie. It’s something that I owe to them. The only review I am scared of is of Vikram Batra’s parents. They will very soon see it.
Re-staging Kargil is a very risky move and it surely can backfire if not portrayed correctly keeping the details in mind. Were there any jitters in this regard?
Obviously! I didn’t know what to expect and it was such difficult terrain and an alien kind of land there. It’s predominantly massive mountains with rocks, dust, and very little oxygen. We were only between 12000 ft to 14000 ft height but the Indian army fought at much higher altitudes. To realize that we had retakes as actors just kind of gives me jitters and scares me that how did our Indian Jawans do it during the war. It was scary for us to shoot and we are the only Hindi film that went and shot there from start to end. There were many elements that went wrong but it was an experience of a lifetime. All the experiences and difficulties we had have been trickled into the camera and it will possibly give you one of the best war movies. You will experience the real fight and real emotions. There were jitters but we had the support of the Indian army. My respect for the armed forces has only gone up multifold.
© Amazon Prime Video
You just told me that you were at a 14000 ft high altitude and you also shared the physical challenges that came your way while shooting for the movie. Was playing the role of Vikram Batra equally mentally draining?
When you are playing someone who has lived in flesh and blood, it’s more challenging than doing a fictional character as you can have your own versions but here, you are given boundaries and have to control your emotions. It’s far more challenging to prep for the character. Keeping all this in mind when I was shooting for the last leg of Vikram Batra’s life, it’s was extremely challenging and emotional to portray someone’s last words. I was very nervous for a good three or four weeks before I started shooting for the last leg. It was emotionally and mentally draining. I hope and pray that it’s portrayed in the right light.

We all know that your grandfather had an army background and we’re sure that he followed a code of conduct and swore by certain principles. Have you taken anything from your grandfather and it has become a mantra of your life too?
It trickles into generations. My dad had experienced it much more and it comes from him to me. There are forces like decorum and work ethic. As an adult and watching the soldier's life up close during the shooting of this film, you realize when a soldier is serving for the country his time is accounted for. He is told when to train and when to rest. You land up adapting the fact that you have to be a focused human being and always try to manage to adapt to the current needs of the hour. Now I understand the stories that my grandmother used to tell me about my grandfather. We all make excuses but in the armed forces, you can’t.
View this post on Instagram
Did your father get to see you play Vikram Batra?
Not yet. I am eager to know what my father thinks of me in a uniform. He keeps joking with me that ‘chalo ek pretend officer toh bana’.
Sidharth, here’s wishing you the best of luck for your movie and future endeavours.

The venue changed as both teams shifted base from Nottingham to London for the second Test but Virat Kohli’s poor luck with the flip of the coin continued he lost yet another toss.
The Indian skipper is yet to win a single toss in red-ball cricket in England, as he has come out for a toss on eight occasions and has lost each one of them.
His terrible luck stretches back to 2018 when he lost all five tosses.
Virat Kohli toss record vs England in Tests

In eight Tests he led India in England, he has lost toss all eight times. (including WTC final)#ENGvIND

He lost the WTC final toss against Kane Williamson At the Ageas Bowl in Southampton and now, has started the series with a couple of more losses.
When playing overseas, especially in SENA countries, (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) where pitches are more lively, winning a toss works to your advantage as it allows you to decide whether you want to bat or bowl, based on the pitch and overcast conditions.
To be fair to Kohli, there is no secret to winning a toss but people have started wondering as to why he tends to lose them more than his other counterparts.

Not just in England, Kohli’s overall toss record against Joe Root is not something to write home about as he won only two tosses out of 16 tries.
Watching Kohli struggling with his poor luck, fans have started suggesting innovative ways to help him break the deadlock and get off the mark.

In the past, we have seen former South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis coming out with a proxy skipper to break the toss jinx when they toured India in 2019. It didn’t work out for him but fans are suggesting he should at least give it a try and come out with either Rohit Sharma or Ajinkya Rahane in the next match.
Laughing at the expense of others has become a norm on social media these days and there was no shortage of people who used the opportunity to start a meme fest.
Losing toss was an Olympic sport.

— revanth sriraj (@RevanthSriraj) August 12, 2021 Winning or losing a toss is definitely not in Kohli’s hands and instead of focusing too much on that, we should be concerned about how well the team is performing whether they bat or bowl first.

The film Shershaah directed by Vishnu Varadhan released on Amazon Prime on 12th August.
The movie stars Siddharth Malhotra who is playing the role of real-life Kargil War hero, Captain Vikram Batra. The movie also stars Kiara Advani as his love interest.
Captain Vikram Batra died fighting in the 1999 Kargil war against Pakistan. Batra was posthumously awarded India’s highest military honor for wartime valour, the Param Vir Chakra.
The recreation of Kargil scenes in the movie will give you goosebumps and the makers have done a great job as most of the scenes looked real. From the scenes showcasing the bunkers blasting to the gunfire scenes, all scenes portrayed authenticity to the narrative of the film.
The scenes are showcased as narrated by Vikram’s brother Vishal Batra. The movie focuses on Vikram’s childhood to his romance with Dimple to his heroic fight in Kargil. The director stuck to the narrative and hence it became even more difficult to show the a real person’s life in two hours.
Check out the trailer of the film here-
Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani’s on-screen chemistry is good in most of the scenes but in some scenes it fails to keep us hooked to the screen. Many scenes in the film makes us emotional and are iconic. Also, cinematographer Kamaljeet Negi has done a wonderful job capturing the real essence of the Kargil fight.
Here are 10 tweets that one should read before watching the film Shershaah-
