    ‘Rape’ is a serious and heinous crime. And in a country like ours, where it happens all too often and with every third woman, it also has serious consequences. Like being sentenced to life imprisonment or worse - facing the death penalty.
    While the punishment for such charges seems more or less befitting for someone who has violated another human body, they are absolutely frightening for someone who did not commit the crime.

    You see, over the years, as innocent women have gathered the strength to stand against sexual abuse and raise their voices against predators, there have also been a select few who only chose to ride the tide to simply benefit out of it. 

    Like several vindictive women who weren’t victims of sexual abuse, but pretended to be so and framed innocent men, taking away from the movement.

    As hundreds of women shared their real horror stories, society felt pressured to address each one of them, even the ones that were fabricated. And suddenly, the word of a man against that of a woman who portrayed herself as a victim, wasn’t good anymore. 

    Result? Collateral damage, the kind that ruined the lives of many innocent men.
    Here are 5 real cases where Indian men were falsely accused of rape -

    In January 2021, a 19-year-old girl in Indore accused 5 men of kidnapping, gang-raping and stabbing her, a case that sent chills down our spine when we first heard of it. 

    She gave out details of having been kidnapped by two men, raped by three more and put in a jute bag to be thrown on the railway tracks. 
    However, as soon as the investigation into the matter began, it was found out that not only the teenager’s claims were inconsistent, but also baseless. No evidence was found to support her claims, for they were false and fabricated and turns out, the complainant even went to the lengths of stabbing herself to corroborate her story.
    2) Lalitpur Vishnu Tiwari Case 2000 © iStock
    Vishnu Tiwari was sentenced to life imprisonment in September 2000 when he was 23-years-old. 

    A woman along with her husband and father-in-law filed a case of sexual assault against him stating that Vishnu had beaten and raped the woman while she was 5 months pregnant. 
    Despite challenging his conviction in 2005, his case was shoved to the side as a ‘defective matter’ for the lack of missing/poor documentation. 16 years later, his case was taken up, and Allahabad Court found him innocent of all charges and acquitted him. 
    But the man had already lost precious 20 years of his life, having served a sentence he never deserved. 
    Turns out, the family had a feud over land with Vishnu and framed him only to be able to get money through the Harijan act.

    An aspiring engineering student was accused of rape by a woman and a family in 2010 after the two families, who were supposed to get their kids married to each other, had a fall-out due to a dispute regarding the property. 

    The family of the woman claimed that the guy had impregnated their daughter and refused to marry her, based on which he was produced in the court and kept in custody for 95 days until he could get bail.
    By that time in February 2010, the woman had already delivered the baby and a DNA test proved that he wasn’t to blame. However, the case went for trial and it was only in 2016 when a Mahila court in Chennai acquitted the man in 2016. 
    The man, who was innocent, to begin with, spent 7 years in jail and was offered compensation of Rs 15 lakhs from the court.
    4) Minor Daughter Accused Father Of Rape 2017 © iStock
    Provoked by her maternal uncle, a minor daughter ended up accusing her own father of raping her in 2017 in Ghaziabad. 

    The man who was accused of the crime spent three long years in jail for a crime he never committed, and it was only during the trial that the story spun by his daughter started to fall apart.
    The daughter then accepted to have fabricated the false case, admitting to having been under the influence of her maternal uncle. The uncle, on the other hand, was only imprisoned for one month and charged a fine of Rs 50,000.

    A woman in the Satara district of Maharashtra accused two men of gang-raping her in a car under the pretext of promising her a job. However, the charge that was seriously made and looked into, happened to be all bogus.

    Upon investigation, it was found out that one of the men was out of the country while the other was not in Satara but in Pune on the day she claimed to have been raped. 
    Apparently, the woman filed the false case only to tarnish the reputation of the men.

    Wrestler Ravi Dahiya assured India of their second silver medal at the Toyo Olympics as he defeated Kazakhstan’s Nurislam Sanayev in the men's 57kg freestyle event on Wednesday. 
    At one stage, Ravi was 2-9 down and knew he was running out of time and needed to do something, that too very quickly.

    With odds stacked against him, Ravi made one of the most dramatic comebacks ever and progressed to the gold medal match beating the two-time World Championships medallist via victory by fall.

    With this win, Ravi became only the second Indian wrestler after Sushil Kumar to reach the final at Olympics Games. 
    He is now on the verge of creating history as one more win and he could become the first Indian wrestler to clinch an Olympic gold medal. 
    Sushil Kumar, who is currently in jail for the alleged murder of a junior wrestler, is India’s most decorated wrestler, a two Olympics medals to his name (a silver and bronze each).

    For the unversed, a bout is declared over on technical superiority if a wrestler opens a 10-point gap between him and his opponent. 

    Before the tournament, unlike many other athletes Ravi wasn’t a household name and not many knew many would have given him a chance of winning a medal at Tokyo 2020 but guess what? By the virtue of reaching the final he has already become the country's best-performing athlete and the best part is he is not done yet.
    He was 3-9 down, with momentum and time against him. But he still didn't lose heart and with a couple of amazing offensive moves, pinned down a two-time world championship medallist.

    Before his semifinals bout, Ravi made light work of his pre-quarterfinals and quarterfinals bout, winning both rounds on technical superiority. He began his campaign against Colombia’s Oscar Tigreros in the pre-quarterfinals and outwrestled his opponent, winning the bout 13-2 on technical superiority.
    He was up against Bulgaria’s Georgi Vangelov in the quarterfinals bout and was even more ruthless and reached the last four with another dominant performance, winning by 14-4, once again on technical superiority.

    Ravi Dahiya learned wrestling at Delhi’s famous Chhatrasal Stadium -- the same venue which has produced wrestlers like Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt, among others. 
    Born in Haryana’s Sonipat district, Ravi started taking wrestling training from Satpal Singh at the tender age of 10.

    Like many athletes in the country, Ravi also faced financial difficulties growing up but his father supported him through thick and thin. He would travel 40km every day from his village carrying milk and fruits for his son.

    In 2015, Ravi clinched a silver medal at the World Junior Wrestling Championships in the 55kg category and hasn’t looked back since, despite battling several injuries along the way. His career has been marred by several injuries but that only increased his hunger for success and we are now seeing the results. 

    The fourth seed Indian wrestler will be up against second-seed Russian Olympic Committee's Zaur Uguev in the final on Thursday.

    Cheteshwar Pujara was one batsman who faced a lot of criticism after India lost to New Zealand in the World Test Championship final. 

    The Saurashtra batsman is a vital cog in India’s Test batting line-up and has been one of the best performers for the side for several years now, but the many people turned their sword on him after just one poor outing in the WTC final and began questioning his batting style, including his strike rate. 
    Things became worse when Indian skipper Virat Kohli said he wanted to bring in “right people with the right mindset” to the Test team who can understand the situation and play fearless cricket. 
    Kohli’s statement led to speculations that Pujara’s time in the Test squad is perhaps numbered and he might be the first player to make way for a youngster in the Test team.

    In fact, this white noise has made its way into the dressing room as well and even Kohli is aware of what is being said in the media regarding Pujara. 

    Kohli opened up about the issue for the first time since the WTC final during the virtual press-conference on the eve of the opening Test against England. 
    Kohli said that no batsman is perfect and everyone, including Pujara and himself, knows what aspects of their game needs improvement and how they can contribute to the team’s success. 
    He also argued that a player of Pujara’s calibre and experience should be left alone to figure out the drawbacks in his game.

    Describing Pujara’s criticism as “unnecessary”, Kohli said he knows that India's No. 3 doesn’t care what is being said or written about him in the media. 

    “It's been going on for a while and I honestly feel a player of his calibre and experience should be left alone and it should be absolutely with the individual to figure out what are the drawbacks in his game,” Kohli said at the virtual press conference ahead of the series opener in Nottingham. 

    “Similarly with me or any other player in this team, we are very aware of the things we need to do for the benefit of the team. I can from outside say criticism is unnecessary but I know for a fact that Pujara doesn't care and criticism is as relevant as you want it to be. 

    "People can say what they want to say on the outside and those are just words at the end of the day. If you feel they mean no value to you, you just carry on, walking on your path,” he said, explaining what is the best way to deal with such criticism. 
    Kohli’s remarks should’ve been enough to put all the rumours around Pujara’s future to rest but instead, fans blamed him as the main reason it all began in the first place, especially his remarks after the WTC final that sparked this debate.

    In Kohli’s opinion, the break came at a right time for them and has helped them re-energise ahead of the all-important series. India’s Test record in England is not something to write home about, despite that many experts believe they are the favourites to clinch the Test series in England.

    Lara Dutta gave us a shock of our lives when we got to know she is playing the role of Indira Gandhi in Akshay Kumar’s BellBottom.
    When the trailer was released yesterday, people did question the absence of Lara from the trailer as no one could have imagined that she was a part of it and was right in front of us as Indira Gandhi.

    It was at the trailer launch event, she revealed that she is playing the role of the former Prime Minister. After asking the media to guess her role, Lara even said, "If anyone is able to guess, then I will take all their family members free to the theatres.”

    She then added, “Okay, so you did see me in the trailer. I'm playing Mrs. Indira Gandhi in the film. That's me. All it took was a call and they said that Lara this film is being made and we are casting for Indira Gandhi's role. That is all it took before I even heard the script. But yes, of course, there is a great responsibility when you're portraying somebody who is an iconic figure like her.”
    About the film, she said, “As you all know that the film deals with a hijack situation that happened during her tenure. Given the dramatic events that were unfolding, she was somebody who was extremely centered and not really prone to any dramatics. So it was important to portray her in that form. I had a great time. There was a lot of homework and research that went behind it. But it was an opportunity of a lifetime that I'm thankful for.”

    The film also stars Vaani Kapoor, Adil Hussain, and Huma Qureshi in lead roles. BellBottom is all set to release on August 19 in the theatres near you.

One of the names which have been associated with the case in various ways is that of model and actress Gehana Vasisth. The Gandii Baat actress has given several statements defending the business and that has garnered a lot of attention on the internet.

    A Desi mom can bargain anywhere and with anyone.  

    It doesn’t matter to her if the amount she is being asked to pay is reasonable or not, she would always try to save a penny or two, regardless. 
    And don’t you ever dare to pull her to the side or hush her, unless you want a lecture on how “tum aur tumhare pitaji ke paas to bohot paisa hai ”.

    Much like us, our local sabziwala and clothing store owners have already given up, too. They now agree to their innocent demand every time they encounter a desi mom (not like they have a choice anyway). 

    However, have you seen your mom bargaining with a doctor or a tuition teacher? We are sure you have. And you are not alone.

    An Indian user on Reddit shared a hilarious account of his visit to the doctor with his mom (another desi thing is to go see the doctor with your mom, even if you are an adult). He shared how his mom bargained with the doctor and paid less fee. 

    The guy wrote, “I just witnessed my Mother bargain with a doctor and conniving him to Reduce consultation fees [sic].”

    Moms have a special skill at bargaining or they are probably tough to say no to. When we try it, we are either told to respectfully move on or are duped into paying extra. And, then we get an earful from our moms too.

    Pakistan PM Imran Khan’s official residence in Islamabad’s Red Zone is now up for rent. The Pakistani Federal Cabinet on Tuesday took the final decision regarding this.
    The move is being touted as a measure to enable the cash-strapped economy for arranging funds.

    Not only this, Pakistan’s Federal Cabinet has decided to rent out the PM’s official residence for cultural, fashion, educational and other events as well.
    According to Samaa TV, two committees have been formed to ensure that the ‘discipline and decorum’ of the Prime Minister's official residence are not violated during the events.

    Not only this, the Pakistan PM’s official residence was rented out for a wedding function of Brigadier Waseem  Iftikhar Cheema's daughter in 2019. PM Imran Khan was also seen attending the wedding.
    Pakistan's Education Minister Shafqat Mehmood had earlier also said that it costs more than Rs 470 million to maintain Pakistan’s Prime Minister's official residence.
