What a time to be alive! The Tokyo Olympics 2020 have shown the world what human excellence is capable of, even during trying times such as the global pandemic we’ve been going through.
Stories of resilience inspire through fables, like children looking outwards for lessons for their lives. The success of the Indian platoon, mainly the women, have given us many such tales.
Chanu Saikhom Mirabai’s victory is the most recent evidence in public memory. Her journey to the victory podium is a lesson in human resilience. However, beyond inspiration, these tales often offer us a deeper insight into real struggles, of the gulf in privilege available to most of us compared with the lives of these Olympians.
With the Indian Women’s Hockey Team qualifying for the semifinals of the Olympics for the first time, their incredible victory over 3 time champions Australia has brought many  such tales to light. Rani Rampal’s story being one of them.
Here are 10 things from Rani Rampal’s story that show the uncomfortable reality of our Olympians:
    1. “I wanted an escape from my life; from the electricity shortages, to the mosquitoes buzzing in our ear when we slept, from barely having two square meals to seeing our home getting flooded when it rained. My parents tried their best, but there was only so much they could do–Papa was a cart puller and Maa worked as a maid.”
    View this post on Instagram
She forged her own escape. A voyage that has brought her to the Olympic podium. Rani Rampal is not one to be blinded by its glamour though, she’s not had an easy ride by any stretch of the imagination. She has fought her battles, a journey that has brought her closer to the first gold  at the Olympics for the Indian Women’s Hockey Team in their history.
    2. “There was a hockey academy near my home, so I’d spend hours watching players practice–I really wanted to play. Papa would earn Rs.80 a day and couldn't afford to buy me a stick. Everyday, I’d ask the coach to teach me too. He’d reject me because I was malnourished. He’d say, ‘You aren’t strong enough to pull through a practice session.’”
“So, I found a broken hockey stick on the field and began practicing with that– I didn’t have training clothes, so I was running around in a salwar kameez. But I was determined to prove myself. I begged the coach for a chance– maine bahut mushkil se convince kiya unko finally!”
View this post on InstagramArmed with an abandoned broken hockey stick, Rani Rampal set forth with her dreams of playing hockey. Despite having been rejected by the coach for being malnourished, her fire inspired the coach to give her a shot at the sport.
    3. “But when I told my family, they said, ‘Ladkiya ghar ka kaam hi karti hai,’ and ‘Hum tumhe skirt pehen kar khelne nahi denge.’ I’d plead with them saying, ‘Please mujhe jaane do. If I fail, I’ll do whatever you want.’ My family reluctantly gave in.”

An unfortunate reality for many of our women athletes is the internalised patriarchy they’ve had to battle since their birth. Rani Rampal’s experience was no different.
    4. “Training would start early in the morning. We didn’t even have a clock, so mom would stay up and look at the sky to check if it was the right time to wake me.”
    View this post on Instagram
Rani’s mother's name might be unknown, but she has to be lauded for seeing the star in her daughter, looking to the skies to keep time. Her mother’s support ensured Rani could make the most of her dreams.
    5. “At the academy, it was mandatory for each player to bring 500 ml of milk. My family could only afford milk worth 200 ml; without telling anyone, I’d mix the milk with water and drink it because I wanted to play.”

Our Olympians are bereft of even the basic necessities. It shows the reality of many of our national sports figures. Imagine the sheer volume of athletes who don’t make it to prominence because of this pitiful state of affairs.
    6. “My coach supported me through thick and thin; he’d buy me hockey kits and shoes. He even allowed me to live with his family and took care of my dietary needs. I’d train hard and wouldn’t miss a single day of practice.”
    View this post on Instagram
There might have been several mythological mentor figures throughout our multicultural history, ground realities however offer a stark contrast. For our athletes good mentorship hasn’t always been accessible.
    7. “I remember earning my first salary; I won Rs.500 after winning a tournament and gave the money to Papa. He hadn’t ever held so much money in his hands before. I promised my family, ‘One day, we’re going to have our own home’; I did everything in my power to work towards that.”
    View this post on Instagram
Rs. 500 is an amount that most of us would spend without a moment’s hesitation. In this country an athlete is expected to latch on to their dreams with such inadequate financial security. It’s astounding that we’ve been able to witness gems like Rani Rampal in the first place.
    8. “After representing my state and playing in several championships, I finally got a national call up at the age of 15! Still, my relatives would only ask me when I was planning on getting married. But Papa told me, ‘Play until your heart’s content.’ With my family’s support, I focused on doing my best for India and eventually, I became captain of the Indian hockey team!”

A future Olympian gets called up to the national team at the age of 15, and what are her relatives’ priorities?
    Getting her married.
If this doesn’t scream patriarchy, I don’t know what does.
Her father was able to keep Rani focused, unencumbered by these noises. And now she’s the captain of the national team.
    9. “Soon after, while I was at home, a friend' papa used to work with, visited us. He brought along his granddaughter and told me, ‘She’s inspired by you and wants to become a hockey player!’ I was so happy; I just started crying.”
    View this post on Instagram
This isn’t her first stint at inspiring the future generation. Rani’s steadily been a shining light for those around her, daring younger kids to dream.
    10. “And then in 2017, I finally fulfilled the promise I made to my family and bought them a home. We cried together and held each other tightly! And I’m not done yet; this year, I’m determined to repay them and Coach with something they’ve always dreamed of– a gold medal from Tokyo.”
    View this post on Instagram
It’s been a long way to the top, having kept her promise of buying her family a home, she’s now got her eyes on gold from Tokyo.
The way to the top isn’t easy. It’s important to appreciate, but it’s also to realize how far we’ve to go to improve the lives of our athletes.

On some days, olive oil is healthier and on others, coconut oil wins the title.

Oh, and how can we forget about ghee. Ever since the keto diet became popular, desi ghee has become a fine competitor too.
Nevertheless, with so many cooking oil fads around us, it’s hard to keep up. All of them claim to be “healthy” for your bodies. But what does that even mean?
Do they have a lesser number of calories?
    Are they more nutrient dense?
Do they help with specific health conditions?
The true definition of what’s healthy, changes from one person to another. However, today, we’ll compare them, keeping all the different aspects of our health in mind.
Without further ado, let’s get started!
    1. How Many Calories Do They Have? Fat percentage of your body is an important health factor for all of us. However, it’s even more important if you have a specific goal in mind. Be it gaining weight or losing, keeping a count of your calories can help you achieve that goal faster.

    via GIPHY
With that being said, cooking oils can be a major game changer for your calorie deficit.
All the three oils have a similar number of calories. One tablespoon of coconut oil has 117 calories, one tablespoon of olive oil has about 119 calories and one tablespoon of ghee has about 120 calories.
    __ECOMPRODUCT__556__
Hence, it’s safe to say that even though the difference isn’t major, coconut oil is the one with the least amount of calories.

    2. Which One Is More Nutritional? Apart from the macronutrients, you must also consider the amount of micronutrients they may have.
Olive oil is not only rich in saturated and monounsaturated fats, but also in Vitamin E and K. Coconut oil is rich in saturated fats and also has small amounts of Vitamin E, K and calcium. However, these are present in very little amounts when compared to olive oil.
    __ECOMPRODUCT__2195__
Lastly, ghee also has a similar amount of saturated and monounsaturated fats, but has 13% of your DV for Vitamin A, which is absent in olive and coconut oil. Little amounts of Vitamin K and E are also found in ghee.
    __ECOMPRODUCT__2237__
Technically, ghee has more vitamins, followed by olive oil and then coconut oil. However, because of the high caloric value, we can’t really rely on these oils to fulfil our daily requirement.
The difference is negligible. Getting your vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables or supplements, is a much healthier option.
    __ECOMPRODUCT__945__
    3. Which One Is Better For Your Heart? Choosing the right cooking oil is essential mainly for your heart health. Oils are rich sources of fats, which directly impact your cholesterol levels as well as overall heart health.
    __ECOMPRODUCT__1504__
A recent study did indicate that olive reduces the risk of  heart diseases by 5%, but it did not reduce the risk of heart attacks particularly. The reduced risk of heart diseases is linked with the high amounts of monounsaturated fats present.
    __ECOMPRODUCT__1394__
Coconut oil has about 90% of saturated fats which are proven to help in reducing bad cholesterol and increasing good cholesterol levels. However, many experts still advise us to not use too much coconut oil because of this very reason. While balanced levels of saturated fats can help reduce LDL (bad cholesterol), high levels of it can evidently lead to poor heart health.
A 2013 study suggested that ghee isn’t that bad for your heart after all, thanks to the monounsaturated and saturated fats. However, it is recommended by experts that no more than 10% of your calories should be from saturated fats. Overall, ghee still has less amount of saturated fat than coconut oil.
    __ECOMPRODUCT__2238__
Strictly in terms of heart health, olive oil clearly wins, followed by ghee and then coconut oil.
Risk Factors The risk factor for all these oils is that they are high in saturated and monounsaturated fats. However, as long as you balance the amounts with the rest of your diet, you have nothing to worry about. Overall, olive oil is the one with the fewest risk factors, because of low levels of saturated fats.
Final Verdict: Which Is The Healthiest Oil? Clearly, olive oil wins this battle.
All the three oils have their own health benefits. However, olive oil has the least risk and is the safest choice for a regular diet.
You can use olive oil for preparing salad dressing, cooking vegetables and even for baking. The only exception is deep frying because it has a low smoke point. Other than that, olive oil is versatile, healthy and even has a delicious flavour to it.

Bollywood is responsible for giving wings to so many dreams and allow us a bandwidth where our fictional thoughts flow like water. With the power of influencing the audience in many ways, some characters in movies stand out for their strength, some for the way they make you look at life and some for merely making you think how unreal they are. Here are 7 characters who basically went all out for love and set some very unrealistic relationship goals for us:

    1. Preeti From Kabir SinghWhile Kiara fans loved her simpleton look and she is beautiful for real, Preeti was problematic for a few reasons. Falling in love and following your heart is no crime but when educated, intelligent girls fall prey to the tantrums thrown by a man-child like Kabir, then so many men assume that a woman will probably bow down to their blatant whims and fancies. For any guy wondering if ‘uski bandi’ will listen to his nonsense and even take a slap, leave it for a fictional character only please.

    2. Raj From DDLJThis iconic movie defines Bollywood for all of us and was one of the few movies back in the day which ignited this perennial desire to roam around in Europe and convince our own bauji to allow us to ‘jee le apni zindagi Simran’. This movie is also to be blamed for the million Simrans who waited for their real life version of Raj. In which world do people not only first manage to break your tiny heart at the railway station telling you ‘main nahi aaonga’, and later come to rescue you from the sad arranged marriage situation, win the heart of your full ‘khaandaan’ and also take you away to the cloud of your dream? So unreal and sad, because secretly, we all have imagined catching a train by holding a stranger’s hand and falling in love. Well that was in our childhood, now it’s downright creepy.

    3. Surinder From Rab Ne Bana Di JodiWhile the multiple problems I have with Taani Ji demands a separate article of its own, but my concern here is the unrealistic standard that Suri Ji aka Surinder has set for men, in terms of pleasing the woman they love and changing for love to an extent that even his own wife doesn’t recognise him. Is this real or is this a situation of a person having issues with identifying their own personality? Also, why will you stay in a relationship where the human loves you minus moustache and your daddy shirt but despise your presence when you are in your ‘real’ avatar? So basically its okay for a man to completely change his life and wear a new identity to date the same girl he married. Kya hai ye bhai?

    4. Veer & Zara From Veer ZaraI don’t want to ruin a romantic classic for us 90s kids which made us all cry secretly in theatres as we stuffed our faces with popcorn, but allow me to ask a few simple questions. Who waits for an eternity for the love of their life and that too, in two different countries where today one might not even get a visa to travel? The reunion in the end hit us hard but in real life, our parents will lose their mind if we tell them that we’re basically going to wait for the love of our life, not cheat, no casual flings, no flirting, just pure wait. This intezaar is unreal.

    5. Vanraj From Hum Dil De Chuke SanamSo you’re telling me that one can marry a dude, tell him you’re in love with another man who is eating pasta in Italy, and this Vanraj bro is so in love with you, he’ll basically take you to Italy to reunite with your first love? If this starts happening for real, so many people would marry for that free vacation and consider breaking up at the drop of a hat.

    6. Aditya Kashyap From Jab We MetThere were some really good points about this character which we loved but the amount of love and care he harbors for the chirpy Geet is sadly non translatable in real life. In which world will we find a secret lover who launches a sim card on our name and then leaves no stone unturned to find us on a hill station, and get us back home to reunite with our long lost lover? No wonder Geet chose him, he was the real love catch here.

There are two sides of the same coin, but not when you are a man who is being accused and abused by a woman in public. People often give the benefit of the doubt to the woman and assume that it is the man who has done something malicious or obscene that a woman had to react this way.

    © iStock
As a woman, I feel terrible after hearing how the Lucknow girl harassed and attacked an innocent cab driver on the road. He didn’t hit back or even said a word. Maybe he was scared that one word out of him, or even a flinch of a hand and the mob would attack him for mistreating a woman. It’s sad that no one did anything to defend the guy, not even the policeman standing there.

Compromising men’s rights or exploiting them in the name of women empowerment is not feminism. It’s not equality. And, women like these who play the ‘woman card’ to get away with their mistakes and wrongly hold innocent men accountable are exactly where we are going wrong.

    © iStock
This is not the first time that a woman has taken unfair advantage of ‘being a woman’ and caused serious damage to a guy’s reputation, image and even career.

Here are some of the many such incidents where playing the woman card worked and innocent men had to pay the price for something they didn’t even do.
Rohtak Sisters Controversy (2014) © Getty Images
The sisters who accused three young men of molestation in a bus were branded bravehearts by news and media. The accused said that they had asked the girls to give up the seat (reserved for senior citizens) to an old woman post which they started arguing and accused them of molesting.

    © Twitter
The witnesses later came forward testifying the men’s side of the story. However, by then, they had lost their chance of going into the Indian Army. The probe went on for three years but men were found not guilty.

Jasleen Kaur Harassment Case (2015) © Twitter
The highly publicised Delhi case where a woman, Jasleen Kaur accused Sarvjeet Singh of sexual harassment on the road. She said she stopped him from jumping the signal and he responded with obscene comments. She posted a picture of him on social media and garnered praises from everyone including the CM.

    © Facebook/Jasleen Kaur
Singh said that he was taking the left turn which was allowed on red signal and didn’t use any vile words. He was arrested but Kaur later changed her statements multiple times which the court found untrustworthy and suspicions arose. Four years after the incident, he was acquitted on account of being innocent.

Bois Locker Room Controversy (2020)This was the internet’s most recent scandal involving Delhi school kids who were accused of having a chat group on social media called ‘Bois Locker Room’ where teenage boys shared pictures of minor girls.
    © iStock
It was later revealed that the guy named ‘Siddharth’ who started the group was in fact a girl using a fake id who planned her sexual assault to test the reactions. However, there were groups where these conversations were happening, this particular group was started by a woman who wasn’t charged, because the police said “she was juvenile and it was a childish act”. The boys in the group, however, were taken into custody.

Bengaluru Blogger & Zomato Delivery Guy Row (2021) © iStock
The case where allegations made by a Bengaluru woman against a Zomato delivery guy divided the internet is still fresh in our mind. While some thought the delivery guy could be guilty of hitting her, others assumed it was a publicity stunt by the woman to get free food from the online ordering service or to increase her followers.
    © Instagram/Hitesha Chandranee
Much like the Lucknow cab driver, there was a poor, innocent man here who was just doing his job but got entangled in a controversy. He was arrested by the police and suspended, although Zomato covered his legal expenses and supported him throughout.

    © Instagram/Hitesha Chandranee
The woman later refused to file any statement, despite being vocal about it on her social media while the delivery boy filed a counter complaint against her for framing and deframing her after support poured in.

These are just a few of the examples where men became the bait to women playing the victim card and had to lose a lot more than just respect and reputation, for something they never even did.

R Madhavan has done some mind-blowing movies in Bollywood. He also had a cameo in the cult classic movie Rang De Basanti. Madhavan was seen as a martyred pilot named Flt Lt Ajay Rathod in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's film.
    © Instagram/R Madhavan
Madhavan spoke about his experience working in the movie in Rakeysh Omprakash's novel, The Stranger In The Mirror. The actor was seen opposite Soha Ali Khan, and they were lovers in Rang De Basanti. For one of the scenes, Madhavan was supposed to kiss Soha, where he proposes to her. The scene is a part of the song Tu Bin Bataye.

Surprisingly, this was also the first-ever scene he shot for the movie. As per reports, R Madhavan shared his thoughts on his first kiss with her in Mehra's novel. He confessed that all he could think about was Soha's brother Saif Ali Khan during this scene.

    © YouTube/SonyMusicIndia Vevo
Madhavan said, "The only thing I could think of was Saif (Soha's brother, with whom I had worked before in a tense movie as rivals) socking my face. But I had to establish that I was an ideal boyfriend. This was probably her first on-screen kiss as well." The tense movie here is Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, where Madhavan and Saif shared the screen opposite each other.

Apart from this scene, in particular, he also added that he was asked to do the role of Karan Singhania but it was later given to Siddharth. Madhavan hence played the role of a pilot in the movie. Rakeysh also revealed in the book that Shah Rukh was his first choice for Ajay Rathod's part, but unfortunately, it didn't work out. He mentioned, "Shah Rukh was approached for Ajay Rathod's role. I pursued him for a while. But the dates didn't work out. With Shah Rukh, you don't question too much. We share a healthy relationship."

    © Instagram/Daniel Craig
For the unversed, even Daniel Craig, who played the role of James Bond, had also auditioned for the movie. Mehra said, "I remember vividly that one of the people who auditioned for the part of James McKinley, the young jailor who walks Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev to be hanged, was none other than current James Bond, Daniel Craig."
