The summers are back in full swing and so is the kadakti dhoop Delhi’s been infamous for. As adults, it feels unbearable to take a step outside in this blistering heat. But it wasn’t always like this. Do you remember the time when things weren’t as hectic and complicated? Back when the onset of summers meant freedom to explore the world, or at least your mohalla. When our lives were all play and very little work. At least it feels like that in hindsight.
Here are five things from childhood that Dilli’s kadakti garmi reminds us of:
Adventure Vacations The excitement that spilled across our faces on the last day of school before the summer vacations began was pure joy. The two months of vacations heralded a summer filled with memories and adventures, irrespective of the temperature outside. Nothing could keep us indoors, not even the blazing heat. And so we got onto our cycles, with our friends, exploring every nook and cranny that this city had to offer us.

Ruby Rooh Afza Imagine yourself walking back home, utterly exhausted after an evening playing out in the heat yet again (much to the chagrin of your parents). Totally depleted of energy, there was very little carrying your feet forward. But then you remember that there was a delicious glass of a ruby-colored beverage waiting for you at home. Nectar of the gods, that’s what Rooh Afza tasted like. Syrupy and served chilled with ice, we’d gulp it down feverishly.

Power Cuts Can’t Stop Us Yes, power cuts still happen. And it feels like the end of the world every time the electricity goes out now. But there was a time when generators and inverters were unimaginable luxuries for most people. So whenever there was a power cut, we’d drag the chatai out into the balcony and just stare at the endless skies, or go downstairs to find other colony kids out in the streets. No stress, just bliss.
© iStock
Amazing Amaltas There are few things as universal to Delhi as the Amaltas. The streets would be strewn with their gorgeous yellow petals, transporting us to wonderland each time we stepped out into the heat. The heat may have been unbearable, but witnessing this otherworldly flora made it all worth it in the end.
© iStock
Long Live the Cooler Back in the day, air conditioning was a privilege unavailable to the masses. So we made do with the humble cooler. The humble yet effective cooler made its presence felt in every house with its loud noises and refreshing air it blew out. Its rotor fans enthused many kids back in the day. Talking into it would morph your voice into something that can be found on modern day hip hop tracks. At no moment would it overwhelm you like the modern-day air conditioner. Perched reliably on your window, the humble cooler provided young versions of us some much needed respite from the heat.

The world may seem unrecognizable from back when we were kids, however Dilli’s kadakti garmi will always be something we can rely on, year after year.

If ‘chhapad faad ke’ has any meaning today, it’s probably this. It’s a commonly known thing that a lot of people from Kerala move to Gulf countries to build a better career and make money to send back home to their family.
A man from Kerala named Ranjit Somaranjan was probably doing the same. Working hard as a taxi driver in Dubai and wishing to do well in his life. For the last three years, he was buying lottery tickets in the hope of trying his luck and winning something. However, much to his dismay, he won nothing until recently, it looks like he won everything. Call it Aladdin’s genie or a big stroke of luck, Ranjit won a lottery worth 20 million Dirhams, which is around 40 crores INR!
© The Khaleej Times
While this sounds like his entire life is about to change for good, there’s a small catch here. He bought this ticket by splitting money between him and nine other friends. The ten friends contributed 1000D Dirhams each and bought this ticket so now the winning amount will equally be split between these 10 people. His phone has obviously not stopped buzzing since his friends and family found out.
In an interview with The Khaleej Times, he exclaimed how life has changed now. “I have been here since 2008. I worked as a driver with Dubai Taxi and different companies. Last year, I worked as driver-cum-salesman with a company but with my salary deduction, it was a difficult life. Now, I have found a job as a driver-cum-PRO at a new company. I will join soon, maybe next month. My salary will be Dh3,500. My wife works at a hotel. I used to buy tickets with the aim of improving my quality of life. I always wanted to do my own business. I will consult my family and make a decision”, he said.
However, like most of us, he is also having a hard time convincing his mother that he is now a millionaire. “I used to always call her and pretend that I have won millions, and she would believe me. But now that I have actually got lucky, she refuses to take my word,” he said.
Well, this story makes us believe in luck all over again!

Yup, Bollywood is at it again. As if ruining songs like the original Masakali by AR Rahman and Mohit Chauhan wasn’t enough, people who call themselves ‘music directors’ and ‘composers’ have ruined yet another classic.
© Hotstar
People who grew up in the 1990s and 2000s will know just how iconic the original Chura Ke Dil Mera was. Sure, the song was a little problematic, but nonetheless, it was a classic. Plus the combination of Kumar Sanu & Alka Yagnik was legendary. It can be safely said that no other pairing has even managed to come close ever since.
The original song was melodious and was a proper 90s classic, with all the signature sound design elements from the era. The video too was somewhat exotic and beautifully titillating. Heck, it would be safe to say that a lot of men started crushing really hard on Shilpa Shetty after TV channels played that song on loop.
© Shemaroo
The new song, though, fails to impress and that too on a number of labels. It sounds like the same generic, autotuned stuff that we get from singers like Badshah, with only a familiar tune. Well, at least the lyrics are much better, one will have to agree.
Whether you compare Chura Ke Dil Mera 2.0 with the original or not, you cannot help but feel that this is yet another generic Bollywood dance number that might be popular for a month or two, and then, relegated to a history where perhaps no one will ever go back to it.
Also, what is it with naming anything ‘2.0’? Do the people counting the beans at production houses not realise that it automatically invokes an unfavourable reaction to it, especially, when a classic is ruined by shoddy execution?
We think that at this moment, every 90s kid who has heard both, the original and the new song, will be feeling something like this -

People on Twitter definitely shared this sentiment.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) released the latest T20I rankings and England’s Dawid Malan continued to lead the batting charts.
Indian skipper Virat Kohli and KL Rahul were the only two Men In Blue to find a place in the Top 10 of the batting rankings.
While Kohli kept hold of his fifth position, KL Rahul jumped a place to finish sixth in the latest rankings.
Both of them are all but certain to lose places as they are not part of India’s second-string side which is in Sri Lanka for the limited-overs series, comprising three T20Is and as many ODIs.

— ICC (@ICC) July 7, 2021
Kohli and KL Rahul both are in the United Kingdom for a five-Test series against Joe Root’s side and the duo will not feature in any T20I game before the T20 World Cup.
With the rest of the teams shifting their focus on the shortest format of the game ahead of the marquee event, Kohli and Rahul’s place in the Top 10 might come under threat.

That said, Kohli and Rahul won’t be lacking match practice because they will be leading their respective Indian Premier League sides, when the second half of the IPL 2021 begins in the United Arab Emirates.
England opener Dawid Malan has been sitting on top of the T20I batting charts for quite some time now but his recent performances have not been up to the mark, deserving of a No. 1 player in the world.

The fans questioned his supremacy and asked the ICC to explain how he was still at the top despite failing with the bat in the last couple of series.

— Abhay Bharadwaj (@princecv688) July 7, 2021India’s bowling unit is regarded as one of the best in the world but sadly, the team didn’t have a single bowler in the Top 10. The newly crowned World Test champions, New Zealand, dominated the bowling chart with three bowlers Tim Southee, Mitchell Santner and Isha Sodhi in the Top 10
South Africa’s Tabraiz Shamsi, who was the standout performer against the West Indies, was on top of the bowling chart with 821 rating points.
He was followed by Afghanistan leggie Rashid Khan and Australia’s Ashton Agar.

Staying friends with your ex-partner is not what most people would recommend, for obvious reasons.
For one, it can be extremely difficult to move on for either of you when you are in touch and hang out as friends. Also, it can (and will) hurt like hell when one of you starts dating someone new.
© Instagram/Katrina Kaif
However, if you don’t want to lose the person and keep them in your life, offering to stay friends is the only option you are left with while breaking up. Not to worry, it can work.
If you both have mutually decided to stay connected as friends after you split as a couple, you can continue to be cordial without hurting each other or yourself.
© iStock
There are some unwritten rules of being friends with your ex in a healthy way that you can follow and make sure this new arrangement doesn’t end up in a disaster.
Here are 5 rules of being friends with your ex:
1. Flirting Is Off Limits © Kunal Kohli Productions
Not only it could be awkward at times but it could rekindle interest or feelings, which is dangerous if it happens to only one party.
When you agreed on being friends, you signed up for a platonic relationship that excludes casual flirting (even if it includes inside jokes) or romantic gestures.
2. Respect Their Space © Maddock Films
They are not your partner anymore so you need to treat them like any other friend you have.
You absolutely cannot expect them to spend their time texting you, calling you or giving you every tiny detail of their life.
3. Set Emotional Boundaries © Warner Bros
When you were together, they might be the first person you ran to when you felt down or had a fight at home or were sick. However, things have changed and your equation too after your breakup.
Don’t depend on them emotionally and don’t seek love, attention and affection from an ex-turned-friend. Set emotional boundaries. No drunk texts, either.
4. Don’t Bring Up The Past © Dharma Productions
While hanging out or conversing with your ex, don’t bring up past memories or romantic evenings you spent together or all the firsts you had.
You need to give yourself and them a chance to move on and look beyond what you had as a couple.
Bringing up what led your relationship to the breakup is also not okay at all.
5. Put A New Label To Your Relationship © Illuminati Films
Do you still call them your ex while mentioning them in a conversation with your friends or family? Stop clinging to that label and instead address them as your friend.
Calling them your ex will only make it harder to move on from the broken relationship and solely look at them as a friend.
