With Team India bowing out in the knockout stage of an ICC event, Virat Kohli’s leadership has come under a lot of scrutiny and these questions are not going to die down anytime soon.
India last won a major title back in 2013 when they defeated England to win the ICC Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.
Dhoni, in terms of titles won, was the most successful Indian skipper ever and continues to be the only skipper in the world to lay hands on all three major limited-overs titles.

After Dhoni, Kohli was given the responsibility of carrying the Indian cricket team forward and he has been mighty successful when it comes to the number of matches he has won, not just at home but overseas as well.
However, the Kohli-led side has failed to deliver any silverware thus far, going out in the knockout rounds on multiple occasions -- 2017 Champions Trophy, 2019 ODI World Cup and now, the WTC final.

Living up to the legacy of Dhoni wasn’t going to be easy and whenever Team India loses a big game, Kohli is always compared to the former India skipper, with experts analysing the philosophies of both the players.

Aakash Chopra, the former Indian opener, feels that Dhoni never liked to tinker with the Playing XI too much and gave all his players a sense of security, while that’s not the case with Kohli, whose team selections have often been questioned, especially after a big defeat.

"If you see his team from the league stage to the knockouts, the team and the protagonists have remained the same. He has always got players who make runs in the big encounters. When you reach the quarterfinals, semi-finals or a final, the team that makes the least mistakes wins, the team that panics the least and the team which consistently plays the same XI so that all players are secure in the end," Chopra explained on his YouTube channel.

"That's what MS Dhoni did for his team. If you see the 2007 and 2011 finals, you will remember Gautam Gambhir. You will remember the entire 2011 World Cup for Yuvraj Singh and Dhoni himself in the final. In 2013, you will see consistent performances from everybody,” he added.

Even in IPL, Dhoni doesn’t like to chop and change the starting XI at Chennai Super Kings and trusts his players to come good at some stage during the tournament. Under his leadership, players generally don’t play for their lives because they know the skipper trusts them and will give them ample opportunities to prove themselves, which helps them play freely.

That said, it’s easy to criticise the Playing XI after a team has just lost the match, especially, when the entire focus should be on analysing the reasons behind the team’s failure and rectifying those mistakes so that the team could avoid the same fate the next time around.

Singer-composer Salim Merchant, who has judged many singing reality shows recently revealed that he was asked to praise all the contestants, irrespective of what he actually wanted to saThis happened after singer Amit Kumar appeared on Indian Idol 12 as a guest and opened up about how he was asked by the makers of the show to praise all contestants irrespective of his personal opinion.
In an interview with RJ Siddharth Kannan, Salim Merchant admitted that he was also asked to praise the contestants but he never gave into it.

He said, “Yes, mere saath bhi hua hai. But honestly, maine kabhi nahi suna unki baat. Shayad aaj main koi judge ki seat pe nahi baitha hoon because of that (Yes, it has happened to me too. But honestly, I never listened to them. Maybe that is why I am not judging a show right now).”
He went onto say,  “Main isliye nahi karta hoon because mujhe kaha gaya hai taareef karna. Main taareef isliye karta hoon ki kisi ki khaamiyaan nikaalne ke bajaay main khoobi dekhta hoon. Agar main uski khoobi ki taareef karoon toh shayad, main aisa maanta hoon ki, woh singer behtar kar sakta hai (I don’t praise them because I have been told to but because I believe in looking at the positives instead of the negatives. According to me, if I praise someone’s strengths, it might help them become a better singer).”

He also said that even the biggest and finest singers make mistakes.
He added, “It happens. You have to be very generous about your comments.” He said that the best thing is to point out the flaws nicely while praising their strengths.
“Mere saath aisa bohot baar hua hai ki the show directors have told me ki please aap log negative mat baniye. Lekin main na, thoda sa smart hoon iss maamle mein. Main humesha khaamiyaan nikaal hi deta hoon par achchi tarah se nikaalta hoon (It has happened to me many times that the show directors have told me to not be negative. I was smart about this. I did point out mistakes but in a nice way). I don’t get crazy about anybody’s faults. I do it nicely.”
