Things get especially interesting when politics is added to the mix and we have enough examples to prove our point. © Facebook Ravi Kishan One such personality who fits the bill is actor-turned-politician Ravi Kishan, who is a popular celebrity in Bhojpuri as well as Hindi film industry. Almost three-decades-old in the entertainment industry, Ravi Kishan started his political career in 2014 by joining the Congress party to contest the 2014 General Elections. Come 2017, he cut his ties with Congress and jumped the gun to join the BJP. As luck would have it, Ravi ended up winning the 2019 General Elections and is now a Lok Sabha MP from Gorakhpur. However, it seems, ever since his move to politics, Ravi Kishan has landed himself in controversies more often than not. Let’s take a look at some of the recent controversies involving Ravi Kishan that made headlines. 1. The Bollywood Drug Cartel Comment © Facebook Ravi Kishan The most recent instance that’s made Ravi Kishan the talk of the town, especially in B-Town, is his comments on the impact of narcotics in Bollywood, when he recently raised the issue of the Hindi film’s industry’s alleged links with drug cartel in Lok Sabha. It didn’t sit well with a lot of people including the Shiv Sena and veteran Bollywood actress and Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan, who went out to raise the issue in the parliament yesterday and said that she was hurt and embarrassed that “that a Lok Sabha member from the industry (read: Ravi Kishan) spoke against the industry yesterday. "Jis thali mein khate hai, usi mein chhed kartein hai.” Jaya Bachchan’s comments have now pinched Ravi Kishan, who said that he didn’t expect a senior to make such comments. 2. India ‘Hindu Rashtra’ Comment © Facebook Ravi Kishan Last year, amid raging protests against the passing of the Citizenship Amendment Bill by the Union Cabinet, Ravi Kishan had courted major controversy when he made the error of calling India a "Hindu Rashtra" on the basis that the majority of the population belongs to this religious community. During an interview Ravi had said, “The population of Hindus is 100 crore, so obviously India is a Hindu Rashtra. There are so many Muslim and Christian countries, so it is amazing that we have a country called 'Bharat' to keep alive our culture.” Sure enough, people didn’t approve of him making that kind of overarching remark and called him out on it left, right and centre. As if that wasn’t enough, he even went on to add that “(CAB) Protesters have gone mad. Let them protest.” 3. When Ravi Kishan Landed In A ‘Sweat’ © Facebook Ravi Kishan Earlier this year, amid the mass migration of migrant workers due to the coronavirus lockdown, a video of Ravi Kishan went viral which was used by people to call him anti-poor and anti-labourer. The video showed Ravi inside a moving car where he could be heard scolding his colleagues for making him travel in an overcrowded car and forcing him ‘to smell the odour emanating from sweat’. When the video went viral, Ravi Kishan clarified that the video was from 2017 and his statement was being taken out of context and used against him. He went on to add that the conspiracy was hatched to put him in bad light and that the misunderstanding was created deliberately. 4. The Infamous Educational Qualification Controversy © Facebook Ravi Kishan Like is the case with most politicians across the board, where educational qualification isn’t up to par with a candidate’s portfolio, Ravi Kishan too found himself in a similar position. Ahead of the 2019 General Elections, a complaint against Ravi Kishan claimed that there was discrepancy in his educational declarations on his election affidavit. It claimed that during the 2014 elections, Ravi Kishan had claimed he was a Commerce graduate, however in the 2019 affidavit he declared himself as “intermediate pass”.
