Throwback Video Of Jaya Bachchan Defining ‘Perfect Bahu’ Has Us Screaming ‘Regressive’

Do you remember that dialogue from K3G where Amitabh, Shahrukh Khan and subsequently Hrithik Roshan talk about “parampara”?  How it was of utmost importance to uphold a few values and traditions of their family?

Turns out, Jaya Bachchan wasn’t any different, not just in the movie but also in real life, except She wasn’t as much trying to uphold Indian traditions as she was trying to feed into Indian patriarchy

To add more context, we are talking about this very old interview of the actress turned politician Jaya Bachchan where she talks about her daughter in law, Aishwarya Rai, and what according to her makes her the most ideal daughter in law ever.

Spoiler alert? It’s going to leave you cringing. Hard.

In a clip from the hit show Koffee With Karan, where the host and director Karan Johar is talking to then actress Jaya Bachchan about how she felt about Aishwarya Rai, Jaya ends up putting patriarchy on display by sharing how one of the main reasons she adores Aishwarya is because she knows how to be ‘quiet’.

Jaya Bachchan starts by saying how she is in complete awe of Aishwarya Rai and then goes on to laud her for qualities that according to her make her an ideal Indian daughter-in-law. These qualities, as per her, are that she knows how to ‘stand behind’, how to ‘be quiet and listen’.

She goes on to say that even though she is a big star, she likes that Aishwarya never pushes herself and knows how to take it all in. Which,  according to a lot of users was only code for knowing that ‘she knows that she isn’t allowed to voice her opinions.’

Several people have come up and called out Jaya Bachchan for her regressive thoughts and shown their dissent towards her opinion on Aishwarya Rai.

A user even wrote, “I don't care how good or not good looking Abhishek is but truly, Aishwarya could've done way better than this family! Do they expect a star like her to just blend in?”

Guess, we can’t blame people for calling Jaya Bachchan out on such controversial views after all, what do you think?
