People have been trolled mercilessly for harmless tweets, they have been arrested for Facebook posts, they have been threatened and abused online for making jokes. Suddenly, we are too touchy about our holy cows. One such self-appointed custodian of religion is Deepak Sharma who kidnapped a boy and beat him up. The boy's crime – he made a meme.

© Twitter

Not only that, he even posted a video of the ordeal and openly threatened people with the same consequences if they dared to make memes about his religion. The sheer audacity of the man is nerve-wrecking. The fact that he had no fear of the law and is ready to repeat his action if need be is a real threat to democracy.

Dear @jaipur_police this fanatic extremist allegedly kidnapped a boy for posting a meme, beats him, threatened to kill him, are you sleeping pic.twitter.com/lDJopVM4Ug
— Irony Of India (@IronyOfIndia_) July 30, 2017
This is a threat to democracy

This is fucked up beyond belief. https://t.co/SNln7eGhBX
— Sapan Verma (@sapanv) July 30, 2017
Civil society was appalled, like they should be

seems like a set up (by Deepak Sharma himself perhaps for publicity)but it amounts to spreading hate, intimidation & violence & cops must act https://t.co/GkoaAdtabH
— Shehzad Poonawalla (@Shehzad_Ind) July 31, 2017
What these so-called protectors of religion don't realise is that god or religion doesn't need their protection. By resorting to hooliganism and violence, they are disrespecting the very god they are trying to protect. There is seriously no argument here; the brutal violence is right in front of us. If we don't find this outrageous, it's only a matter of time till this hooliganism spreads like wildfire and changes the face of India forever.
