Twitter Guns Down Shobhaa De After Her 'Statutory Warning' For The Indian Women's Cricket Team

The Indian men's cricket team has been infamous for grabbing eyeballs and stealing the limelight from their female counterparts. But, that's not the case - at least for now. A splendid show from the Indian women's cricket team in the ICC World Cup ensured that Mithali Raj & Co. got their fair share of accolades and praise in a male-dominated sport.

Despite missing out on a rare chance of recording their maiden World Cup title triumph, the Indian women's team returned back to a rousing welcome from all corners of the country. There was praise from celebrities and adequate coverage from the media and suddenly, the names of Indian women cricketers are no longer restricted to confines of their friends and acquaintances.

Such was the extent of their dominating World Cup campaign that the Indian PM Narendra Modi hosted a grand felicitation ceremony for the Mithali brigade. The Indian PM couldn't help but shower praise on the women's team for making the country proud.Β

Β© Twitter/narendramodi

Apart from the praise, the exploits of the Indian women's team also attracted a lot of gifts, cash rewards, lucrative jobs, promotions and sponsorship opportunities - something they've been deprived of for a long time now. After lurking in the shadows of their male counterparts, it was high time the Indian women got their hard-earned due.

But, there are few people who've probably mastered the art of ruining the moment with their illogical and uncalled for comments. Columnist Shobhaa De is probably one of them.

The 69-year-old novelist, who has a knack of inviting trouble with her comments, once again did what she does best: irk the masses. While everyone was lauding the Women in Blue, the veteran columnist took to Twitter and expressed her concern for the Indian team.

Oh Lord! Please protect our amazing women cricketers from crass commercialisation and greed that has ruined most of our Boys in Blue.
β€” Shobhaa De (@DeShobhaa) August 1, 2017
"Oh Lord! Please protect our amazing women cricketers from crass commercialisation and greed that has ruined most of our Boys in Blue," she tweeted.

While her views and understanding of cricket is comical itself, De probably outdid herself by claiming that male cricketers in India have been ruined because of greed. The Virat Kohli brigade is currently ranked No. 1 in Tests, No. 3 in ODIs and No. 5 in T20Is. The team managed to reach there with adequate hardwork and dedication. And, cricketers acting in commercials for money have got nothing to do with their exploits on the field.

Β© Reuters

The Indian captain is a prime example. The Delhi lad rose through the ranks in Indian cricket and is currently one of the biggest names in the game. He does commercials and promotions just like any other sportsman. But, he has never let that affect his game. Not only he continues to get better with his skills, Kohli also has numerous charities where he gives back to society.

Clearly, cynics like Shobhaa De can never understand that, which is why they usually end up making an utter fool of themselves on social media.

Why should the women not benefit from their stardom?
β€” Tushar (@TusharG) August 1, 2017
Thats below the belt madam.
