From PM Modi To Amitabh Bachchan, Here's What The Nation Thinks Of SC's Triple Talaq Verdict

The issue regarding the century old practice of triple talaq was finally addressed by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, where the panel gave a momentous verdict ruling the practice as unconstitutional. Triple Talaq is a practice, wherein a man can divorce his wife by stating the word ‘talaq' three times and SC by a majority ruled out this practice as void, illegal and unconstitutional. In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi too hailed the decision and called it “historic”. He further added that, “It grants equality to Muslim women and is a powerful measure for women empowerment.”

Judgment of the Hon'ble SC on Triple Talaq is historic. It grants equality to Muslim women and is a powerful measure for women empowerment.

Ever since SC gave this verdict, the nation has stood visibly divided between favouring the decision and opposing it. On one hand where some are supporting this decision calling this a great move that will help women stand strong in their fight for rights, there are some who are arguing and criticizing SC for interfering with the Muslim laws. Reportedly, West Bengal minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury, who is also the president of Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind said, “The Supreme Court verdict is unconstitutional and we will not abide by it. Our central committee will meet in Delhi today to decide our future course of action on this.” He further said that the apex court and the central government have “no right to interfere in ‘Muslim personal law.'”

While some people were busy criticizing the verdict, others were busy trolling former cricketer, Mohammad Kaif for his stand in favour of SC. He took to Twitter to share his opinion on the issue and said, “Welcome decision by Supreme Court to declare Triple Talaq unconstitutional. Will give Muslim women security. Gender justice is much needed.”

The moment he posted this Tweet, people lost their calm and started trolling him. Time and again, Kaif has found himself surrounded by trolls and hate comments and this time too people targeted him for voicing his opinion.

India got independence on 15 August 1947, but  it took 70 years for muslim women to breath freely.

— Rohit Kothari (@rohitkothari85) 22 August 2017

On one hand where Kaif got mixed reaction for his tweet, our celebrities too weren't far behind in voicing their thoughts on the issue of triple talaq.

Welcome judgement by #SupremeCourt 2 declare #TripleTalaq as unconstitutional This will start a new chapter in empowerment of #MuslimWomen ð

— Madhur Bhandarkar (@imbhandarkar) 22 August 2017

Actor Amitabh Bhachchan too spoke about the issue at a press conference. He said, “The judgement speaks for itself and we can't argue with the law of our country.” He further added that he felt sad by the restrictions imposed on women in the society. He reportedly said, “Young girls are prevented from being educated because she is going to get married, so why waste money on her. I feel sad for them. They defy all the social norms that may be prevalent in their villages and in their lives for so many years to come out and sit in front of me on the hot seat (for KBC)…They succeed in what they had visioned for them which is so inspiring to see.”

Poet, screenwriter and lyricist, Javed Akhtar too lauded the verdict as a welcome decision and reportedly said, “Any law, personal or otherwise, which victimizes women must be removed. Many of us have been shouting about getting rid of the triple talaq. I've spoken against it at various public events for close to 20 years. It's a pity the decision to abolish this inhuman practice has come from outside the Muslim community.”

No matter how critical the issue is, it can never pass the gawking eyes of savage Twitter users. They always manage to find some witty reaction to it.

Unconstitutional, unconstitutional, unconstitutional: Supreme Court strikes off  #TripleTalaq

— Khushi (@Khushi_Beee) 22 August 2017

#TripleTalaq is that uncle dancing vulgarly at a wedding.
Almost everyone wants it stopped.
But, nobody wants to be the one to stop it.

— Sorabh Pant (@hankypanty) 22 August 2017

#SupremeCourt rules that #TripleTalaq is unconstitutional.
India achieves unity in divorcity.

— Ramesh Srivats (@rameshsrivats) 22 August 2017

While the whole nation debates over triple talaq verdict, the recent development is that all the pending cases where Muslim women challenged divorce given to them under “talaq-ebiddat (instant divorce)” and their marital status is likely to be restored and such talaq cases will be declared invalid.
