Here's How You Can Avoid Nasty Protein Farts

If you are a protein guzzling machine then you are no stranger to protein farts. Bloated stomachs and discomfort could be a cause of too much protein shakes or the type of protein shakes you take. It could be embarrassing sometimes, as it could get noisy and damn smelly. Have you ever wondered what causes these farts and if there's a way you could avoid it, wouldn't that be great?

What Are Protein Farts?

Protein farts are simply what we call gas that's produced from eating a lot of protein. The by-product of protein digestion in the body is ammonia. So the deal is that protein requires a lot of stomach acid to be broken down properly. If your intestinal tract is too alkaline, protein won't be broken down completely. It will then ferment and cause the stomach to bloat and excessive gas after eating or drinking a shake. Whey is a milk-based protein that contains all essential amino acids and is easy and quick to digest. If taken in excessive quantities, it can cause upset stomach and related symptoms such as bloating, cramps and more frequent and loud bowel movements. Apparently an average person passes gas about 14 times a day; however it's more if you are a protein lover.

Let's Try And See What We Can Do To Avoid Those Nasty Farts.

1) Try Consuming More Fibre

The process of breaking down food in the body is called the thermic effect. The longer it takes to break down a particular food, the higher the thermic effect that particular food has. Protein has a very high thermic effect. When the body breaks down protein, nitrogen is left. Some of that nitrogen escapes out of your body with a mighty loud fart. Increasing your fibre content in your consumption can reduce the farts greatly as fibre doesn't have that a great thermic effect as protein.

2) Type Of Protein Matters

Ideally, concentrate protein causes more farts as compared to isolate protein since the filtration process is longer and it takes out majority of the lactose. Concentrate protein has much more lactose. If you have a problem with lactose you can try a soy protein, but then again, you don't get the benefit of a first class protein.

3) How You Drink Your Protein Matters

Try drinking your shake slowly rather than gulping it down quickly. If you gulp down a drink too quickly there are chances of you ingesting excess air into your digestive system which can contribute to the production of nitrogen.

4) Size Of The Meal Matters

Keep your meal sizes a bit smaller so your body can have the time to digest the food and won't be overloaded with work. Having excessive amount of food will keep you gassy in the morning with smell of burps from last night's dinner.

5) Mixing Milk

If you mix your protein shake with milk it could leave your stomach bloated and cause burps and farts. Try having your shake with water instead. Also you could avoid mixing your protein in an open container as the protein will be in contact with air and you could ingest this air once again while consuming it. Preferable using a closed container to shake your mix or shake your protein will do.
