Red Car To Red Planet: Elon Musk Is Sending A Tesla To Mars Playing 'Space Oddity' The Whole Way

Even though he has a company called 'The Boring Company', anything and everything Elon Musk does is far from boring.

Combining his love for Mars and his numerous companies, he's sending a Tesla car to Mars while playing David Bowie's Space Oddity during the entire trip. Is this man for real, though? This is probably the coolest way to do a test flight.

And, the best part about this whole thing is that it might've started out as a joke on his Twitter. In the beginning of this month, he tweeted about how he will be launching Falcon Heavy from Apollo 11 pad at the Cape, making it SpaceX's first unmanned flight to Mars.

Falcon Heavy to launch next month from Apollo 11 pad at the Cape. Will have double thrust of next largest rocket. Guaranteed to be exciting, one way or another.

Payload will be my midnight cherry Tesla Roadster playing Space Oddity. Destination is Mars orbit. Will be in deep space for a billion years or so if it doesn't blow up on ascent.

And, if you also thought 'Why?', he's already ready with an answer.

I love the thought of a car drifting apparently endlessly through space and perhaps being discovered by an alien race millions of years in the future

You know what, scratch that joking part, he probably was serious from the start and you can actually expect this kind of unexpected behaviour from Elon Musk only. Okay, I honestly can't tell if he was joking or not, but it is happening for real.

A brand new cherry red Tesla is really going to space inside the Falcon Heavy, a new megarocket that will be the most powerful operational one in the world.

A Red Car for the Red Planet Test flights of new rockets usually contain mass simulators in the form of concrete or steel blocks. That seemed extremely boring. Of course, anything boring is terrible, especially companies, so we decided to send something unusual, something that made us feel. The payload will be an original Tesla Roadster, playing Space Oddity, on a billion year elliptic Mars orbit.

Also, a part of the long caption he posted along with the pictures on Instagram requires a special mention – β€œOf course, anything boring is terrible, especially companies, so we decided to send something unusual, something that made us feel.” Taking a dig at himself, quite impressive.

The launch is set to happen next month, but a date has not been finalized as of now. This is SpaceX's most ambitious mission till date and if Musk actually pulls it off, it will honestly be legendary. Just imagine a Tesla car will go to places a human has never been.

Moreover, the car will also have a copy of 'The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy' in the glove box, apparently. This is just getting cooler and cooler, tbh.

Yes
