He hails from humble backgrounds and was driving a cab with Ola when fate knocked his door, and life took a beautiful turn for him.  One day, as fate would have it, his passenger happened to be a Colonel himself, and one conversation changed his course of life. In an interview, Om explained what happened. “It is Col. Bakshi Sir who changed my life. He told me about the opportunities in the armed forces and the Combined Defence Service (CDS) exams and even referred me to Lt. Col. Ganesh Babu, the then Director, Armed Forces Officers Selection Orientation Programme.” 

Post this encounter, Om studied hard for the CDS exams and even managed to crack it in the first attempt. He then went on to clear the SSB exam in Bhopal and landed at the OTA. Om's father, Uttam Paithane was a cab driver for three decades and the family was undergoing a lot of financial pressure.

Life has now obviously come full circle for the Paithane family, who are beaming with pride for Om. “This has resulted in a total transformation in Om's life and personality.. The way people look at him and his uniform with respect. He feels proud donning the uniform, but is still humble and eternally grateful to all the people, including Col. Bakshi Sir, who guided him at all steps”, his brother said. Om's journey is an inspiration to many and people are in awe of his hard work.
