Gone are the days when we could watch a movie on our smartphone or tablets for free, thanks to the unbelievable offers by Reliance Jio. The 4G only operator has declared that they have no choice but to withdraw their plans for including three months of free Internet to customers as a part of their “Jio Summer Surprise” scheme.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has “advised” the telecom giant to withdraw all schemes that offer free Internet to their subscribers due to concerns from the company becoming a monopoly.

Reliance Jio introduced free Internet as a part of their ‘welcome offer’ which was later extended to March 2017. However, since the offer ended last week, Reliance Jio wanted to add another three months to the offer with the “Jio Summer Surprise” scheme. However, Reliance Jio said in a statement, that their customers will have to pay to continue using their 4G services; however, those who pay will be offered three months of free internet, later this year.

Reliance Jio claimed, last week, that they now have over 72 million subscribers who have already paid to use their service. The recent decision to not offer free internet anymore will most likely not hurt Reliance Jio’s user base as the company continues to offer data plans that undercut their competition with a huge margin. Reliance Jio said that they will be “fully complying” with the regulator’s advice.
