Why The Uruguay-Egypt Clash Will Have Liverpool Fans On Their Toes

This time in 2014, Barcelona's potential coup for then Liverpool forward Luis Suarez was gathering pace. The move had left most Reds fans distressed as the Uruguayan striker was leading the La Celeste to the World Cup in Brazil on the back of an extraordinary campaign for Liverpool. Suarez had scored 31 goals in the Premier League, as he helped Liverpool finish 2nd in England's top division for the first time in five years. In July, his move to the Catalan side was confirmed as the Merseysiders couldn't resist a £75m offer for their star striker. The supporters were agitated at the time, but despite his switch, he is still fondly remembered at the club.

Four years on though, Suarez's mantle has been taken over and bettered by one Egyptian International in Mohamed Salah. The winger moved from Italian side AS Roma last summer, and to everyone's surprise, including the Liverpool supporters, has gone on to achieve what nobody has ever done in England before. Salah became the first player in a 38-game Premier League season to score 32 goals as his strike against Brighton on the final day of the league campaign helped him surpass the previous record (31 goals) shared by Alan Shearer (Blackburn in 1995-96), Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United in 2007-08) and Luis Suarez himself (Liverpool in 2013-14).

This evening, in the second clash of the 2018 World Cup between Uruguay and Egypt, Suarez will lead the attack for his side while Salah is stuck on the bench desperately trying to recover. Both teams are eager to start off their campaign with an important three points. A lot has changed for both the players in the past four years as Salah has gone on to become the most feared hitman in England while Luis Suarez has guided Barcelona to many major honours, including the UEFA Champions League in 2015 and the La Liga on three occasions (2015, 2016 and 2018). Despite their contributions on the domestic fronts, questions will need to be answered if either of them fails to deliver in what promises to be a nerve-wracking contest.
