Valtteri Bottas Stuns Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel & Ferrari To Win Australian Grand Prix

Despite having the faster car as many times as their rivals, Ferrari lost out to Mercedes who retained Formula One World Constructors' Championship for a fifth consecutive year in 2018. While Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes basked in their glory, Ferrari was left to ponder over the series of errors by Sebastian Vettel and their team.

In a bid to change their fortunes for the 2019 season, Ferrari "raised the bar, and tried to be as extreme as they could" when they unveiled the new car 'SF90' to reflect their 90th anniversary last month. Though new team boss Mattia Binotto claimed that the new car was "a development of last year's, not a revolution", Ferrari had set the pace at the start of pre-season testing.

Even Hamilton couldn't stop himself from saying: "Ferrari are very strong. It appears they have a better package than last year, which means it will be a bigger challenge for us". But, on 17th March, Vettel and Ferrari were far from being a threat to Hamilton and Mercedes as the struggles for the Scuderia continued in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

In fact, it was Valtteri Bottas who eventually stunned everyone by upstaging his Mercedes teammate Hamilton to steer clear towards victory at the F1 season opener Down Under. Starting second on the grid, the flying Finn passed pole-sitting Hamilton at the first corner and seldom came under threat from that point onwards.

Capping off a perfect race after setting the fastest lap and claiming the bonus point, Bottas took the chequered flag a massive 20.9 seconds ahead of Hamilton, ending his drought that stretched back to 2017 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. With his teammate building on the lead, Hamilton dropped back after making his first pit stop early to cover off the threat of Sebastian Vettel behind.

Red Bull's precocious Max Verstappen also drove for long at the Albert Park circuit and emerged from his pit stop, hot on Vettel's heels. The Belgian-Dutch racer surprised the Ferrari driver with an attack midway through the race to eventually claim the final spot on the podium. Vettel and his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, boasting of their new SF90s, could only manage to finish fourth and fifth respectively.

A stellar start for Bottas, and a bumpy ride for Ricciardo

"I don't know what just happened...I don't know what to say! It was definitely my best race ever. I felt so good and the car was so good," an elated Bottas said after upstaging his teammate Hamilton who had overshadowed the Finnish last year. For someone who is now in his third tear with Mercedes, Bottas' win is also a major boost and might just keep promising Frenchman Esteban Ocon - who's waiting in the wings as team's reserve driver - at bay, for now.
