In 2018, the hashtag 'Me Too' took social media, Bollywood and the whole country by storm, when actress Tanushree Dutta accused actor Nana Patekar of harassing her on the sets of 'Horn Ok Pleassss'. Soon, more and more women came forward mustering the courage to share their stories and that's when we realised that there's more to it than what meets the eye.
Just when we thought that these stories will change the work ethics in the industry, the way people behave with women on sets or outside and people will become more responsible and avoid passing derogatory remarks, what happened with actress Nayanthara brought us all back to square one.
Despite being one of the biggest superstars in the South film industry, Nayanthara had to face some uncalled for sexist and derogatory comments at the trailer launch of her own movie, 'Kolayuthir Kaalam'.
The remarks came from actor-politician Radha Ravi, who passed these comments on stage, at the trailer launch event of HER movie.
So the Producer's council and the Nadigar Sangam can't take any action in my case because they cannot 'interfere in the functioning of other unions'.
But This man is actually abusing a successful female actor on stage.
Do take action, if you could?
Mucccccchu thanksu. https://t.co/GXHhpZ8d85
According to reports, he said "Nayanthara acts as a ghost, and then she goes on to act as Sita as well. She acts as Sita! Earlier, to play the role of a goddess, they would look for [someone like] KR Vijaya. Now, anyone can be cast to play a goddess. They can cast someone who you want to pray to when you look at them, they can also cast someone you want to call towards you when you see them!"
Radha Ravi's derogatory remarks have not gone down well with her co-actors and people on social media. 'Badla' actress Taapsee Pannu wrote that this is disgusting beyond words.
This is disgusting beyond words. Who asked him about casting pre requisites and is he the president of character certificate association? This comes for one of the strongest actresses of the industry,I can only wonder what he might have to say about others https://t.co/tFjTZ04gRB— taapsee pannu (@taapsee) March 24, 2019
Just heard some filthy comments from Mr.#RadhaRavi to press about a very fine actor. Your comments sir reflect the "filth in your character" and the "fineness in her many performances" as actor.
Such a shame to the community you are!! #RadhaRavi
Just a reminder that this Radha Ravi banned me from the dubbing union.
I haven't recorded one Tamil song since October 2018.
So much is the loyalty for Vairamuthu and Radha Ravi. Or is it because or their political affiliations?
Celebrate the molesters and ban the women. ð
A sad and distressing reminder of the sickeningly consistent occurrence that women who call out & report sexual harassment at the workplace do so at the cost of their careers.. enough is enough! #TimeToChange #TimesUp Go @Chinmayi may your lovely voice ring loud, clear & true â£ï¸ https://t.co/qnRy8WaGcs— Swara Bhasker (@ReallySwara) March 24, 2019
Nayanthara too shut down his sexist remarks and said that she can act as Sita, a ghost, a friend or a lover. Here's her full statement.
