Ayushmann & Jitendra Deliver A Powerful Message For Homophobes In Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan

"Main aadmi hun, aadmi se pyaar karta hun..."

Yes, I am going to address the elephant that's always been in every room in India- homosexuality, as our society has always had issues with love and even more when itâs about same-*** relationships.

As Ayushmann Khurrana says in his latest movie Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, we have seen legendary love stories like that of Romeo and Juliet but no one has seen or set an example for a relationship between two homosexual individuals.

But now, we have an example to look forward to. Kartik aka Ayushmann and Aman aka Jitendra Kumarâs new jodi in SMZS is, without a doubt, the best thing we have seen in a long time.

Director Hitesh Kewalya, who has dealt with such a sensitive subject with both simplicity and maturity in the movie, has intelligently portrayed through Ayushmannâs character, that homosexuals have to fight every day, but there is no fight harder than the one with your family.

What are people in love looking for? Nothing but acceptance from their families and loved ones.

In SMZS, you see a middle-class family struggling to accept the fact that their son is gay. You have Gajraj Rao as Shankar Tripathi and Neena Gupta as Sunaina Tripathi, who are convinced that their son has some sort of 'disease' that can be cured after he gets married to a kanya.

When we meet Kartik and his boyfriend Aman, they are already in love and living together in Delhi. Things change for the two when they go to Allahabad and Amanâs father Shankar sees them kissing.

The director has also captured the feeling of apparent 'disgust' that most parents or the society has after seeing two homosexuals in a relationship.

The movie, more than talking about homosexuals, addresses homophobia which, in itself, is a rather interesting take on the whole discussion.

Homophobia is so deep-rooted in our society and the director show this perfectly in a particular scene, wherein Tripathi stages a religious ârebirthâ ceremony to ânormalizeâ his son and cure his bimaari.

As Simran and Raj had to fight for their love, Kartik and Aman too have to ask for their rights. Itâs interesting to see that Hitesh used the Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge template to make people realize that gay relationships are as same as the straight ones. I wonât tell you the entire story because this will take away from you the sheer delight of watching this movie on the big screen.

Ayushmann has delivered one more masterpiece and he will keep you hooked with his performance as Kartik. While conversing with MensXP, he had said, âWe proudly call it the first commercial movie based on homosexuality. But at the same time, we have to tread a line so that we can be more accessible to the masses and especially the regressive audience. It's not an easy film and it's tricky because it's a movie based on a family that eventually finds out their son is a homosexual.â

But, the real show-stealer for me is Jitendra Kumar as Aman, as he is relatable and will keep you glued to the movie until the end. He is effortless as an actor and itâs refreshing to see him on the screen.

Jitendra and Ayushmann have real chemistry and their moments together bring authenticity to the message that the movie is trying to deliver.

Both Gajraj Rao and Neena Gupta have done a terrific job but I somewhere felt they were under-utilized as actors. However, they add their own tadka to the movie and for that, I am going to give them brownie points.

What didnât work for me was how the director spent too much time with Aman and his family issues which somewhere takes away from the lead and their message.

The movie has its own high and low points but itâs surely worth a watch as it takes guts to talk about something which is still not accepted in the society.
