It was in 2018 when Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) management surprised everyone after naming Dinesh Karthik as their new captain, replacing their veteran star Gautam Gambhir. While Karthik's appointment as skipper got mixed reactions, Kolkata, under his leadership, did reach the Playoffs stage in his maiden season as captain.
However, doubts over Karthik's leadership skills reached an all-time high when the Shah Rukh Khan co-owned franchise crashed out at the league stage, finishing fifth with just six wins and eight losses, last season. Despite a dismal outing last year, Karthik, amid criticism, managed to save his captaincy, perhaps with a promise of an improved outing in IPL 2020.
