Mukhar Mai was sentenced to gang rape and public humiliation by a local council, back in 2002. But, instead of becoming a victim of her circumstances, Mai turned it into the cause she would fight against. She took her attackers to the Pakistan Supreme Court and never gave up her fight.

“I want to be the voice of those women who face circumstances similar to what I did,” Mai had said in a statement to the Associated Press. “My message for my sisters is that we aren’t weak. We have a heart and a brain, we also think,” the 44-year-old added.

Cut to the present, and the world is noticing Mai walking the ramp—as confident and graceful as ever—for Pakistani designer Rozina Munib who explained in a statement that the reason for choosing Mai as the showstopper was “to spread the message that rape shouldn’t put a full-stop to someone’s life”.
