After more than a month since Sushil Kumar was involved in a brawl with fellow wrestler Sagar Rana at the Chhatrasal Stadium, which led to the death of the latter due to severe injuries, eye-witness and another victim of the Olympian’s relentless beatdown, Sonu Mahal was finally able to narrate what happened on that day.

In an exclusive interview with Aaj Tak, Sonu, who was the other person to get beaten up alongside Rana, expressed that Kumar was extremely angry on May 4 and 5 after a former Chatrasal coach, Virendra opened his own academy in Nangloi, and Rana helped him by taking 50-60 wrestlers with him to the new institution.

Sonu added that the attack with the stick was simply the final chapter of all the crimes the two-time Olympic medallist had committed while adding that he had also kidnapped and held hostage five individuals. Later, Kumar had to release one of the hostages after his wife called the police.

According to the eyewitness, Kumar was practically hunting for Rana and was not going to stop until he got his hands on the junior wrestler. In order to get information on Rana's whereabouts, Kumar and his thugs kidnapped two people Amit and Ravindra, and thrashed them to know Rana’s address.

They would then go and hold Rana hostage, beat him up with sticks, while leaving him on the floor, bloodied and breathing his last. 

One of the biggest revelations made by Sonu was that Kumar’s gang had kidnapped Rana’s friend Bhagat Singh, which led to his wife calling the police. Once Sushil learned about the involvement of the local authorities, he made Bharat video-call his wife and forced him to tell her that he was fine and that he wasn’t held hostage.

However, the wife wasn’t convinced and called the police once again. It was only after this second call that Sushil was forced to let Bharat go.

Once the news of Rana’s death went public, Kumar ran away from his house and continued to dodge the crime branch for over two weeks until he was finally arrested on a highway, and has since been in jail.
