Ravindra Jadeja, the batter, came to the party for India as he scored an unbeaten 175 against Sri Lanka in the first Test in MohaliΒ on Saturday. Jadeja was involved in three partnerships of over 100 runs with Rishabh Pant, Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Shami.Β
The southpaw smashed three sixes and 17 fours en route to his highest Test score. It was also the highest score by an Indian batter batting at number seven in a Test match. The previous record was held by former India captain Kapil Dev who had made 163 against the same opponent.Β
Ravindra Jadeja crosses Kapil Dev, who had made 163 against Sri Lanka in Kanpur in 1986 while batting at No.7.

Only three batters from the country have a score of 150 or more in Tests batting at 7 or below in Tests: Jadeja, Kapil and Rishabh Pant.

Jadeja had the chance to register his maiden double century but he slowed down towards the later stage of his innings as Sri Lanka bowlers started to bowl defensive lines and stationed fielders on the boundary, not allowing him any easy runs.Β Β
This dip in the scoring rate forced India's new Test skipper Rohit Sharma to declare the innings, leaving Jadeja 25 runs short of his maiden double ton.Β
Here comes the declaration and that will also be Tea on Day 2 of the 1st Test.

Unhappy with the declaration call before the Tea break on Day 2 of the first Test, fans took to Twitter to express their frustration and said the decision was made to save the top-order's reputation who failed in the Test series opener.Β Β

β€” Akshat Ashar (@AsharAkshat) March 5, 2022Β Rohit could only manage 29 runs while Mayank Agarwal, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer too got starts but failed to convert it into a big one like Jadeja.Β
Jadeja's knock was a fitting tribute from him to his first IPL captain and Australian legend Shane Warne, who passed away on Friday.Β Β
