After close to nine months, fans returned to the cricket stadiums as India took on New Zealand in the first T20I at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. The Pink City was awarded an international match for the first time in eight years and the players ensured that the fans left the venue with happy faces.
While it was a complete team effort from India that saw them winning the match by five wickets and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, there was one batter who stood out from the rest and played a key role in bringing smiles on the faces of the fans who flocked to the stadium in large numbers.

Batting at number three, Suryakumar Yadav faced exactly seven overs and blasted 62 runs, with his knock studded with six fours and three hits over the fence. Right from the moment he came into bat, the Mumbai batter dominated the New Zealand bowlers, especially the spinners.
This was his third fifty in just seven T20I innings but this knock held a special significance for the right-handed batter personally because it came on his wife Devisha’s birthday and he dedicated the innings to her.

The way he batted, it felt as if he was determined to take home the Player of the Match award. He played proper cricketing shots and hardly gave the Black Caps a sniff. That said, NZ had a clear cut chance to get him out in the 16th over of the innings but his IPL teammate Trent Boult dropped a sitter, giving him extra life.
He couldn’t make most of the opportunity and gifted his wicket trying to play a ramp shot after adding only a few more runs to his tally. After the match he thanked Boult for dropping his catch and giving his wife the β€œperfect gift”.

β€œAbout Trent, it's my wife's birthday also and it's a perfect gift from him,” SKY said at the post match presentation after he was adjudged the Player of the Match for his superb fifty.
When asked about his performance, he said that he puts a lot of pressure on himself during nets and tries to replicate whatever skills he practices during training in the match.

β€œI have not been doing anything different, just being myself whatever I have [been] doing since the last 3-4 years.
β€œI bat the same way in the nets and replicate the same in the middle. I try and put a lot of pressure on myself in the nets, for example if I get out I just try to come out of the nets and try and think what better I could have done and it really helps when I play in the middle,” he said, reflecting on his approach.

From the match-winning knock to the dropped catch, most of the things went his way but he was still disappointed with himself because he couldn’t finish the match and things started to drift away towards the end.
When it comes to international cricket he is still a rookie and experiences like these will only help him evolve as a better player and win many more matches for the country.

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has made a name for himself as an honest and unbiased cricketer who speaks his heart out and does not shy away from speaking the truth to the masses.
On Wednesday, the cricketer played his very first T20I match in a bilateral series since July 9, 2017, against Jamaica. In the four overs that he bowled against the Black Caps, the 35-year old went on to pick two important wickets belonging to Mark Chapman and Glenn Phillips, while giving away just 23 runs.

Coincidentally, Ashwin’s return to bilateral T20Is also fell on the same day as former Indian skipper Rahul Dravid’s first match as the newly appointed head coachΒ of the Indian cricket team. The Chennai star opened up about his thoughts of playing under the management of Dravid, in the post-match discussion.
"It's too early for me to comment on Rahul Dravid's coaching style, we need to give him breathing space. He's put the hard yards in through the U-19 level etc. He won't leave much to chance, and he'll be all about preparation and process, so that we can bring the happiness back into the Indian dressing room," he said.

This clearly suggests that the disappointing early exit from the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2021 tournament in which India could not make it beyond the round of Super 12, has had an impact on their enthusiasm.
However, some major changes within the team, such as the captaincy going from Virat Kohli to Rohit Sharma, the introduction of Dravid as the new head coach, and some of the senior cricketers being rested for the entire New Zealand tournament could possibly bring in a breath of fresh air. The fact that India were able to defeat the Kiwis by five wickets just days after losing to them in the World Cup matchΒ would also help bring back some of the lost morale.

Having said that, New Zealand have proven time and again that underestimating them as a credible opponent can be the worst mistake that a team can make. With two more matches left in the series, the Men in Blue must stay on track to get an early win. Based on the kind of mentality that Dravid owns as a cricketer and an elite coach, nothing less can be expected from the squad.
