While cinema has evolved with timeΒ  and controversial topics are easily accepted today, one can only imagineΒ  the ordeal of a filmmaker who wanted to narrate his tale back in the 70s or the 80s. That golden period gave us some great action and romance, but here are three controversial movies which stood the test of time and stirred up quite a storm:

    1. Aandhi- Just like its name, this political drama stirred up a storm in the nation. The plot follows a female political leader who shared an uncanny resemblance to former PM, Indira Gandhi.Β  The films explored various topics like her estranged relationship with her husband as well. While the makers maintained that they had just copied her look and rest was fiction, they had to remove and edit a lot of things after it didn’t go down well with the supporters of a political party.Β  Certain scenes like the political leader shows smoking and drinking in the middle of an election campaign and in fact the film faced a complete ban during the national Emergency.

    2. Kissa kursi ka – This movie was helmed by MP Amrit Nahata and was basically a full blown satire on PM Indira Gandhi and her politician son Sanjay Gandhi. The movie was banned during the Emergency and the prints were also destroyed after being confisticated.Β  The movie starred Shabana Azmi and Utpal Dutt.
    Β
    3. Garm hawa-Β  Another movie which ruffled the feathers of controversy in the country was based on a story written by celebrated Urdu writer Ismat Chughtai. The backdrop is the 1947 independence period and this movie tells a deep tale of a Muslim man who is in an emotional battle of heart and mind about leaving his homeland in India and moving to Pakistan with his family. The movie realistically captures the religious angst and was put on hold as communal violence was perceived to be one its repercussions.
