Comedian Vir DasΒ has landed in trouble after he delivered a monologue as part of his recent performance at the John F Kennedy Centre in Washington DC., with many on social media calling him out for "insulting India". He uploaded a video on Instagram, titled β€˜I Come From Two Indias’.
In the nearly seven-minute-long video, Vir DasΒ is heard talking about the duality of the country. He mentions topical issues India is grappling with including the battle against COVID-19. Vir talks about how Bollywood divides the nation on Twitter and ironically unites the audience in the theatres. He mentions how women are worshipped in the day and gang-raped at night. Vir is heard talking about the crackdown against comedians, lack of information about the PM CARES fund and does not forget to mention the farmers' protests. He also mentions that some might find it a gigantic joke but it’s not.

He also shared a clarification note but that also didn’t go down well with people. He wrote, β€œThe video is a satire about the duality of two very separate India's that do different things. Like any nation has light and dark, good and evil within it. None of this is a secret. The video appeals for us to never forget that we are great. To never stop focusing on what makes us great.Β
"It ends in a gigantic patriotic round of applause for a country we all love, believe in and are proud of. That there is more to our country than the headlines, a deep beauty. That's the point of the video and the reason for the applause," his statement read.Β

Ironically, Vir's statement on how there are two sections of people in India was reflected in how people reacted to his video too. Obviously, there were people who attacked him and brutally trolled him. People called him a traitor and that he had no right to insult the country. Some even called him a male version of Kangana Ranaut.Β

A complaint has been filed against Vir Das at Tilak Marg Police Station for allegedly using derogatory language during the event. Making comedy comes with a great risk of hurting people’s sentiments or offending someone whether you intended to or not. Most stand-up comedians have faced the wrath of trolls, even got arrested for telling a joke on stage. Indian comic Vir DasΒ is also no stranger to controversies and trolls over his sketches.Β

His latest one that has caused an uproar is a monologue that he released titled Two Indias. The six-minute video was a part of his show in Washington DC with an Indian audience jam-packed inside the John F Kennedy Centre.Β

He posted the video on his social media account and captioned it, β€œTWO INDIAS - Vir Das Something I wrote on the morning of the show. At the end, after many laughs, we filmed it....and made some noise for a country we love, and are proud of.Β

The monologue is a satire on the ironic polarity of India and its people. One particular line from the video which went viral as soon as it was posted, seems to have not sat well with people, which goes, β€œI come from an India where we worship women during the day and gang-rape them during the night”. For this, he has been trolled by some people on the internet.
    Β© Instagram/Vir Das
Now, actress Kangana RanautΒ has reacted to the video and called him a β€˜criminal’. She posted stories on her Instagram account saying action should be taken against him.Β

She wrote, β€œWhen you generalise all Indian men as gang-rapists it gives rise and encouragement to racism and bullying against Indians all over the world...after Bengal Famine Churchill famously said, β€˜These Indians breed like rabbits they are bound to die like this...’ he blamed Indians’ *** drive/fertility for the death of millions because of hunger... Such creative work targeting an entire race is soft terrorism... strict actions must be taken against such criminals @virdas.”
    Β© Instagram/Kangana Ranaut
Vir Das issued a clarification about the video on Tuesday in a Twitter post asking people to β€œnot be fooled by edited snippets.”

β€” Vir Das (@thevirdas) November 16, 2021He posted it after a lot of people expressed outrage on social media over the contents in the monologue and some even filed an FIR against him with the Mumbai Police.Β However, some also defended him and said he only spoke the truth and said nothing wrong.

On Tuesday, the ICC confirmed that Pakistan will be hosting the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. It has been a long journey for the Pakistan Cricket Board and their team and their process of making the global governing body trust in their security has taken ages.
Judging by the reactions of some of the most famous names and in the Pakistan cricket fraternity including former pacer Shoaib Akhtar, and the head of the PCB, Ramiz Raja, the news felt nothing short of a festival for the nation.
Super excited to hear about Pakistan getting the hosting rights for 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
β€” Shoaib Akhtar (@shoaib100mph) November 16, 2021It’s a matter of great pride and delight that Pakistan will be hosting ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This great news will surely excite millions of Pakistani fans, expats and world fans to see great teams and players in action and will allow the world to sample our hospitality,” Raja wrote on Twitter celebrating the steop taken by the ICC.Β
However, not everyone is equally happy or excited about the fact that a global-level tournament is being organised in Pakistan, a country where cricketers and common folk have been subjected to severe security threats.Β Β

β€” Viren Sihag (@viren_sihag) September 22, 2021 Earlier this year, it was reported that the New Zealand cricket team had to cancel their tour of Pakistan moments after Martin Guptill’s wife received a threat about her husband’s lifeΒ if the Black Caps were to land in Pakistan. Soon after the Kiwis, the English squad also called off their tourΒ becuase the players weren’t comfortable visiting the country.
As a result, the fans on social media are either talking about how the location of the tournament will definitely get shifted to Dubai in the coming years, while others are saluting the bravery of all the teams and players who will be going for the Champions Trophy in 2025 despite learning and understanding the history of terrorism in the country.

β€” Vicky (ΰ€¨ΰ€΅ΰ€¨ΰ₯€ΰ€€) (@MODIfiedVicky01) November 16, 2021Β While there is still about three years left for the tournament to take place, the chances of some of the major teams, including India - the biggest element of attraction in international cricket - refusing to go to Pakistan, are already high due to security and political issues.

The New Zealand cricket team, despite putting up a brilliant show throughout the tournament, came up short in the final of an ICC event yet again. Kane Williamson posted a competitive total on the board in the summit clash but the Australian batters made light work of the run chase, reaching the target in the penultimate over, losing only two wickets in the process.
    Well played New Zealand

At the half-way mark, when New Zealand finished their innings with 172/4 in their stipulated 20 overs, many of us thought it would be a cracker of a contest as chasing a big total in the final wouldn't be easy. But Aaron Finch’s men, despite losing their skipper early, didn’t give the Kiwis a sniff and won their maiden T20 World Cup.

However, we must not forget that winning and losing is a part and parcel of the game. The fans have every right to be disappointed but we should also thank the Black Caps for exceeding all expectations yet again. They were responsible for knocking out two pre-tournament favourites India and England. The final didn’t go their way but there is no reason why they shouldn’t be proud of their overall performance. They have earned our respect.Β
While the whole world is congratulating Williamson and his team, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir, who had picked them to win the tournament, was extremely disappointed with the way they gave up the match in the second-half without putting up much fight.Β

Taking a dig at the Kiwis, the cricketer-turned-politician said that if he was a fan of the New Zealand team, he would have demanded a refund as their performance wasn’t worthy of a final.Β
β€œMy favourite side after India was New Zealand. Seeing them bullied around like an apprentice wasn’t a pleasant experience,” Gambhir wrote in his column for leading English daily The Times of India.Β

β€œNew Zealand is one team that prides itself on meticulous planning, clear role definitions, precise execution and all this without any fanfare…If I was a New Zealand supporter, I would have demanded a refund seeing my team all over the place in second half. It wasn’t a performance worthy of a final,” said Gambhir, who was India’s top-scorer in the 2007 World T20 and 2011 ODI World Cup final.Β

The fans didn’t like his comments, and rightly so. Blaming him for New Zealand’s defeat, some of the fans joked that it was his pre-match predictionΒ that jinxed the Kiwis and they ended up losing the final.

On a serious note, a fan asked if he had demanded any refund from the BCCI when the Men In Blue were sent packing in the group stageΒ itself.
According to this what refund he has demanded from BCCI after india was sent from group stage despite having played very good in warmups? #kuchbhiboltahai

β€” Sports and stuff.co (@Anish51981435) November 16, 2021Β Of all the people, Gambhir should’ve known that no player wants to lose a match and every time they step on the field, they try everything in their capacity to bring smiles on the faces of their fans but sometimes things just don’t go their way.Β
As a former athlete we expected him to encourage fans to get behind the team and support the players, irrespective of whether they won or lost. Such comments are expected of an ordinary troll but not a former cricketer who played at the highest level for so many years.

The outbreak of Covid-19 across the globe changed the way we live and look at the world-physically and emotionally. As we continue to usher ourselves into this mould of the new β€˜normal’, the repercussions of a post-Covid reality continue to create ripples in our lives. Looking from the lens of how it affected the men in India, the social construction of gender was twisted and has taken a new shape.

To ignite the much-needed conversation of β€˜post Covid evolution of masculinity’ on International Men's Day, we decided to look at the various aspects of what changed and how it changed for the men in the country, and above all, how it redefined β€˜masculinity’ for them .Β
Thanks to Imtiaz Ali, Ayan Mukherjee and Ranbir Kapoor, the idea of bildungsroman, or coming of age, has become a hackneyed concept. Although this is a thing that everyone (okay, maybe not everyone) actually goes through at some point in their lives, we don’t give it a second thought anymore.

Much like everything else the pandemic had an impact on, this process, this journey one has to go through to β€œbecome a man,” or come of age, underwent a rather radical change.

For starters, for a whole lot of people, this journey was very accelerated, almost as if someone had pushed you off a cliff. For others, this may have been excruciatingly slow, gnawing away at their sanity and perhaps their very identity.Β
    Β© iStock
For me, it was almost instantaneous, and yet it was in waves. However, I was too slow, or rather too occupied to even realise this. Given that the proverbial fog has cleared, and things have started to settle down, I think now would be a good time to take stock of the situation that I am pretty sure most guys my age would find themselves in.
Here are six things that I realised about β€œBecoming A Man” during, and after the pandemic.
Becoming The Parent To Your Parents Β© iStock
If children are lucky enough to see their parents in their old age, they might have to take care of them. This means feeding them, ensuring that they are comfortable, that they have everything they need, taking care of their medicines and ensuring that they take them on time. Normally, you would be around 45-55 years old when you go through this.

Because of this pandemic, I went through that at the age of 26. When my mother contracted Covid for the first time, I was worried. This was in early 2020, when even the best of doctors did not know what to do and how to go about things. Even getting tested was a herculean task because no matter where you went, there were no tests available. Luckily, mom had a minor case of Covid, and with some experimental treatments, she made full recovery in about two weeks.
Almost a year later, when she contracted Covid for the second time during the second wave, it was bad. I was petrified. An agnostic, this was the time when I started praying.Β
Unless you have had an extremely rough childhood, you rarely think how your parents will die. You may think about them being dead at times, but you don’t come close to a situation where that might become true. Luckily, she had a miraculous recovery yet again.
Suddenly, You’re An Adult Β© iStock
And no, I don’t mean that β€œyou can buy your own cigarettes” or β€œyou can have a driving license” adult. The one thing that this pandemic has surely done, is to help put things in perspective. The things that I would fight over with my brother seemed meaningless, and petty. The things that I would just ignore thinking that it isn’t my business, or rather responsibility, became my responsibility.Β

In case my parents fell desperately ill, I would have to find a hospital, and get the doctors to find a bed for them. I had to keep a track of our health insurances, and ensure that they were valid, and up to date. I had to ensure that people around me did not see me flustered, or in a panic, or that would have made things only worse.Β
You β€œRun” The House Β© iStock
Taking care of yourself, cooking for yourself, washing your clothes et al is fine when you’re living by yourself, in hostels or PGs. Taking care of your family, that too when you also have to take care of your office and earn a living is a completely different ball game. No matter how hectic your office schedule seems to be, you just have to find the time to cook, clean, and shop for groceries.Β
As mundane as it may sound, buying groceries and your monthly supplies when things were normal, when you would simply be handed a list of things to buy, was different. Taking stock of your kitchen and your supplies closet, noting everything down, calculating how long something will last - all of this hits you differently. Dealing with everyday life, without a strong support system is painful.
This is when you realise that the support system that you have around you, mainly your domestic workers, you depend on them more, than they depend on you.Β
Your Relationship With Money Changes Β© iStock
These sudden onset of responsibilities mean that you become acutely aware of what money actually means. If you have been a spendthrift, this realisation hits a little more deeply. You start saving up, and this time in a much more serious manner. You start reading up on investments to the best of your ability, trying to make sense of terms that seem convoluted like β€œexpense ratios” or β€œNAV.” Instead of saving up to buy the latest iPhone, you start saving up for a situation we call "just in case"

Having said that, you also come to realise that at the end of the day, money is a tool, a means to an end, and will therefore mean something different to everyone.Β
Before the pandemic hit, I would haggle over Rs 5-10 with every vegetable vendor that I would come across. Negotiating with rickshaw pullers felt like I was embodying The Art Of The Deal. So much so, that aunties, all across India would be proud of me, and perhaps claim me as one of their own. You see, my mother had taught me well.
Now, having realised that perhaps that the Rs 5-10 would be much more beneficial for the rickshaw puller, I don’t feel like haggling.
Coming Face To Face With Failures, Despite The Best Of Intentions Β© iStock
Picture this. One day, you’re speaking to your best friend, and are planning to meet and catch up on what’s been going on in your lives. Lockdown hits, and almost as if you’re on autopilot, you forget about your meetup. Then, one day, you get a call from your friend, and you get to know that his father is seriously ill, and eventually he passes away.
What do you say to your friend, who has just lost his father? How do you deal with the fact that in the darkest phase of their lives, you cannot be there for them? How do you reconcile with the fact that one of the most popular and friendly guys in college is having trouble in finding people to perform his parents' last rites? Or worse, what do you say to the surviving parents of your friend, who succumbed to the atrocious monster that Covid was, at the age of 26?Β
You realise that there’s nothing that you can do to unburden them, that this isn’t a situation that can be fixed with a few cigarettes and a bottle of Old Monk. Finally, you accept you have failed, and you move on, almost as if you’ve started becoming an android.
Sure, you must’ve seen death before, but at this scale? Dealing with the death of your favourite grandparent, who’s lived a good and long life, is totally different from dealing with the death of your best friend, who’s your age.Β
You Start Thinking About Your Well Being Β© iStock
Amid all this, if you ever get the time to just sit by yourself, with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, you will come to the realisation that you had got your priorities all messed up, that you were chasing the wrong things in life. What comes first and foremost is your well-being, and then, of those around you.Β

You start taking care of your health, you go out of your way to eat right, you start exercising even without thinking about the gym. And then, there is your mental health.
There is a reason why conversations around mental health were taking place at an unprecedented level during this pandemic. If one is looking for a silver lining in the cloud that this despairing pandemic has been, let it be the fact that people have realised just how important mental health is and are finally ready to have a conversation around this.
The Big Picture Β© UTV Spotboy
The milestones of coming age may not have changed that much during the pandemic. What has changed is how those milestones were spaced out. In a better world, these are milestones that one generally crosses over a period of decades. Thanks to the pandemic, people who came of age in the last two years had to go through these milestones in a matter of weeks.Β
Which perhaps brings us to the second silver lining in all of this, the resilience of human spirit. I don’t mean to sound esoteric at all, but I genuinely feel that people who have survived these two years with their spirits intact, can survive anything. As for people who have just survived, well, you’re not alone.

Indian Premier League franchise SunRisers Hyderabad had made headlines earlier this year when they decided to strip David Warner off his position as the team captain and even go on to drop him from the Playing XI.Β
There was a lot of conjecture making rounds in the cricket fraternity. Some suggested that Warner was being punished for speaking up in a press conference against the SRH selectorsΒ and in favour of his teammate Manish Pandey. Then there were those who felt that the batter was dropped because of him being out of form.
    View this post on Instagram
However, within a couple of months of being dropped from the franchise roster, the Australia star has not only helped his national team win the T20 World Cup 2021 in brilliant fashion, he is also crowned as the Player of the Tournament.Β
Now that Warner is back in top form and looking to hit the shots out of the park, how did the SRH management decide to deal with this news? By simply trying to save face and making it sound like the decision to drop him from the squad was to give the youngsters a chance to gain some experience.Β
    View this post on Instagram
β€œFor David Warner obviously, he has been an iconic T20 player. But it is unfair to recognize people like Warner only in this format. He is just a champion player. His situation leading to this World Cup was a little bit disappointing. He was left out of the Sunrisers team,” Director of Cricket at SRH, Tom Moody said in an interview with ESPNcricinfo.Β
β€œBut a lot of that was to do with the fact that the Sunrisers had got to a point from where they couldn’t qualify. So it was a case to look at the likes of Jason Roy and the young players that were in the squad. And give them the opportunity. So we can as a franchise look forward to seeing what it looks like moving into 2022,” Moody added.Β
    View this post on Instagram
While Moody makes it sound as if it was a mutual decision, Warner’s actions ever since he was dropped have made it clear that he wasn’t happy with being ousted from the squad. In fact, the cricketer event went on to say that he will be putting him name in the IPL Mega Auction pool, hoping to get bought by another franchise. And considering the kind of show he just put on, we’re convinced that a lot of team owners would be interested in having him wear their jersey.
