Incidents of alleged substance abuse have been rife these days, with mainstream news and media pouring over each and every angle possible in the Aryan Khan Drug Cruise case.
Lately, Bollywood seems to have become the poster child for most narcotics-related indiscretions, at least according to the NCB.

Just last year, in 2020, following Sushant Singh Rajput’s tragic demise, the NCB went in full swing to pin blame on any and every possible celebrity. Deepika Padukone, Rakul Preet Singh, and Sara Ali Khan were a few of the celebs hounded for their alleged connections to a global drug syndicate, which seems to be the NCB’s preferred allegation to harangue these stars. But no one faced the repercussions of the entire drug fiasco from 2020 quite the way Rhea Chakraborty did. Her character was assassinated on primetime television, with the wildest conspiracy theories being flung at her doorstep.

The year is 2021, and we seem to be following a pattern with the drugs case. This year the persons of interest are Shah Rukh Khan’s son, Aryan Khan, and Chunky Panday’s daughter, Ananya Panday. While their precise involvement in this entire debacle is yet to be discerned, what’s clear is that the mass populi of India are puritans with absolute revulsion towards anyone partaking in substance abuse of any form.

While there are deeper layers to uncover to truly understand the nature of rehabilitation and restituitonal justice in India, for now, enjoy these Bollywood films that discuss the perils of substance abuse:

    1. Sanju This biopic of the OG bad boy of Bollywood, made by Rajkumar Hirani, narrated the life and trials of Sanjay Dutt. In fact, Sanju baba himself had confessed that there are no drugs known to mankind that he hasn’t dabbled with. From his various run-ins with the law to his struggles with hard drugs, Sanju was an attempt to reclaim the Bollywood actor’s public narrative. Ranbir played the titular role, while Anushka Sharma, Manisha Koirala, Jim Sarbh, and Vicky Kaushal put in memorable shifts as well.

    2. Dev D.The cult classic by Anurag Kashyap was a contemporary retelling of the Bengali classic, ‘Devdas’. While the original Devdas limited himself to alcohol as his favorite vice, Abhay Deol’s Dev was addicted to a smorgasbord of psychotropic substances.

    3. Gangs Of Wasseypur Anurag Kashyap’s ability to make memorable cinema out of visceral subjects was evident in Gangs Of Wasseypur. The film takes the viewer through the power struggles of three criminal families. With an insatiable thirst for power comes the propensity for substance abuse, as seen in Wasseypur. Memorable performances by Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Richa Chadha, Huma Quereshi, and Pankaj Tripathi make this film worth several repeat watches.

    4. Dum Maaro DumGoa has long been considered people’s preferred destination to let loose. So it was only natural that Rohan Sippy made a film highlighting substance abuse issues prevalent there. The film may have been largely forgettable, with tepid performances by Abhishek Bachchan and Prateik Babbar, but at least it attempted to have an uncomfortable conversation when most would have looked the other way.

    5. Udta PunjabDirected by Abhishek Chaubey, Udta Punjab is a well-made film that discusses the drug menace that is prevalent amongst the Punjabi youth. The movie clicked with the audience because of a couple of reasons. Firstly, it steered clear of any attempts at being preachy, focusing instead on the harsh realities of substance abuse. Secondly, Alia Bhatt, Diljit Dosanjh, Kareena Kapoor, and Shahid Kapoor delivered terrific performances.
Which of these films have you seen?
