At the risk of sounding like an 80-year-old, kids these days are pretty smart and tech-savvy. They open their eyes on iPads and Macbooks but it wasn’t like that back in our day.

We remember the days when there was no Google or the internet around all the time to twiddle your thumbs and reach the bottom of the truth with one touch of the screen.

We believed the most outrageous lies told by our parents, cooked-up stories and rumours that surfaced in schools. Cheers to the simpler times!

However, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that our childhood would have been much simpler and more fun if we had the internet back then to check bizarre myths and rumours.

In case you forgot, here are some of the weirdest stories and rumours that all desi kids of the 90s blindly believed because there was no way to Google it:

    1. Undertaker Can’t Die © Instagram/Undertaker
The biggest lie and the most controversial story we naively believed is that the Undertaker cannot be killed.

He was a WWE wrestler, not a video game character but that didn’t stop us from believing that he had seven lives.
    2. ‘Emptiness’ Singer Committed SuicideRemember transferring the song ‘Emptiness’ via Bluetooth phones in school and a particular rumour that made this track a mega-hit?
The rumour was that the song was composed by an IITian Rohan Rathore who wrote the song for his girlfriend and then committed suicide. Some said he died of cancer.
However, neither of it was true but man, what the heck were we drinking with our Bournvita?
    3. Sleeping Under A Tree Will Kill You © iStock
Our parents used to tell us if we slept under the tree at night, we would be killed by a ghost who resides in the tree.

However, there may be a scientific reason to back this lie.
Since trees release carbon dioxide at night, it can actually be harmful to us. All kids were traumatised by this story, so much so that we are still terrified of sleeping anywhere near a tree.
    4. Ricky Ponting Used A Spring Bat © Ricky Ponting
Desi cricket fans were convinced that Australian player Ricky Ponting used a spring bat during the 2003 World Cup final vs India.

It was the only explanation for India's defeat against Australia.
Also, this started on April Fool’s Day by the disheartened fans but we still sort of believed that. If only, we could google the truth out of it right then!
    5. Black Coloured Sodas Have 'Gutter Water' © iStock
I am pretty sure a parent who was fed up with their child drinking cold drinks “especially the black ones” cooked this up.

But we believed it and used to warn others too from drinking the gutter water infused sodas. Why did it never occur to us that FSSAI would be sacking the manufacturing companies right away if that was the case?
    6. The Many Legends Of Chewing GumChewing gums were and always will be cool but our parents did the best they could to keep us away from it.
From rumours like it contained buffalo and pig fat to it killing you if you swallow it, there have been so many bizarre myths about these sweeteners.
Some involved the water tattoos that come with it (that they give you cancer), while some said it contained a drug that makes you addicted to it.
    7. 'Kaanta Laga' Girl Died Of Skin Cancer © T-Series
When the remix of the ‘Kaanta Laga’ song was released, it was instantly a hit among desis including kids (which is surprising and disturbing TBH).

However, there was a rumour that followed about the girl in the song, Shefali Jariwala that she had died of skin cancer because of the huge tattoo on her arm. To our surprise, she is very much alive and healthy.
Any more bizarre stories you can recall from your childhood that kept you up at night?
