With less than a month left at the start of the T20 World Cup, Mumbai Indians players’ poor form has become Team India’s biggest cause of concern ahead of the marquee event.
Earlier, only fans and experts were vocal about the MI players -- Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya and Rahul Chahar -- being out of touch, but now, even the BCCI office-bearers and selectors are worried that their choices could hurt India’s chances in the tournament, that they want to win so badly.

Out of the six Mumbai Indians players who were named in India’s 15-man T20 World Cup squad, only two -- Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah -- have impressed with their performances, while the rest of them have struggled terribly so far in the second phase of IPL 2021.

According to reports, the selectors are keeping a close eye on the performance of these out-of-form Mumbai players and if they continue to fail in the next couple of matches, some of them could even face the axe.

“Yes, it is a bit of a concern but we still have few matches left in IPL to get them back in form. Hopefully, they will. Suryakumar has been amongst runs for India so he is not a big concern at the moment. Ishan Kishan too did well in Sri Lanka. Virat also spoke to him on Sunday and let’s see how it goes,” InsideSport wrote in its report, quoting a BCCI source.

While the MI batters have failed in all three matches, Delhi Capitals’ Shreyas Iyer has made a great comeback after shoulder surgery, scoring 90 runs in just two innings, and has made a strong case for his inclusion in the main squad.
In case the selectors decide to make changes to the initial squad, Kishan would be the first player to be shown the exit door with Iyer taking his place.

“We have Shreyas Iyer as the backup, if there are any concerns, he could be added. But it’s too early to say anything. Ishan Kishan is an important player and so are Suryakumar and others. There is no point speculating,” the BCCI source added.

Despite sitting out of two of the three games and flopping in the one match that he played, all-rounder Hardik Pandya’s place in the side is secure as selectors don’t think they have a like-for-like replacement for the Baroda cricketer.

“Hardik is recovering and Mumbai Indians have managed him well. We will see how it goes. He is bowling at the nets, so that’s a good sign. Rohit is there, so he knows better how to handle him. You are talking about Hardik and there is no backup at the moment. Shardul and Deepak are good options but they are yet to prove as regular all-round options in T20s. So, Hardik remains the best all-rounder,” the report read.

The selectors are already facing a lot of criticism for including Hardik Pandya, with a questionable fitness status, in the 15-member squad for a big tournament like the T20 World Cup.
The confidence they showed in the 27-year-old cricketer while drafting him in the main squad looks like more of a hollow promise that would be difficult to meet. With great confidence, the chief selector had said that Hardik would bowl his full quota of four overs. At the moment, this claim seems far-fetched as Hardik has yet to deliver a single ball since the restart of the IPL.
India’s last major trophy came way back in 2013 when they won the Champions Trophy, since then they have only faced heartbreaks and fans have slowly started to run out of patience.
To avoid another major embarrassment, the selectors must put their ego aside and consider making not one but at least three changes to the side based on players' current form.
