Bollywood. The land of glitz and glamour. A fantasy for most Indians, who dream of making it big on the silver screen.
With fame comes the obvious moolah. And with Bollywood actors commanding exorbitant figures per project, who wouldn’t want to dare to dream that high?
Lately, there’s been a surge in conversations around pay disparity among male and female actors in Bollywood.

Recently, a report stated that Ranveer Singh had charged somewhere around Rs 50 crores for Baiju Bawra, helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, while his wife Deepika Padukone walked out of the project after demanding the same pay as her husband, which apparently did not work out.

Amidst all this, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s soon to be launched autobiography, The Stranger In The Mirror gives us a glimpse of his journey as one of India’s most prominent filmmakers.
A journey as fabled as his, obviously, comes with interesting tidbits, one of them involving a certain Sonam Kapoor and her contribution to Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.
    View this post on Instagram
He revealed that Sonam Kapoor charged a measly Rs 11 for her role in the biopic based on Milkha Singh’s life.
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra was effusive in his admiration for the actress, “Sonam understood that the film was not a love story - it was about a Partition survivor’s tryst with his horrific childhood, and that Isri Kaur, the sister, was his only connection to a past that he was reluctant to both own and discard."
    View this post on Instagram
Rakesh and Sonam share an equation that goes back to 2006, when they worked together on Delhi-6.
They enjoyed each other’s work so much that the legendary filmmaker  wanted to enlist her talents for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag in 2013, albeit for a brief appearance.

“Sonam Kapoor benevolently accepted to play a guest appearance for a princely sum of Rs 11 only for her brief portrayal of Biro," recalls the veteran filmmaker in his autobiography.

    View this post on Instagram
He didn’t shy away from praising Sonam Kapoor’s humility, as he elucidates further, “She chose to accept Rs 11. She had a special appearance in the film. Both of us shared an amazing journey with Delhi-6 before that. She told me that she needed just 7 days for the shoot and she praised us for trying to say something so beautiful, about the partition of this country and the spirit of Milkha Singh. So, she wanted to contribute to the film as well. It was very nice of her.”

Even though Sonam Kapoor comes from immense wealth and privilege, it’s uncommon to hear of stars charging such humble figures all because of their dedication to a project.

This act of sincerity and humility will always be remembered fondly as part of her legacy in Bollywood.

When MensXP recently interviewed Farhan Akhtar, he told that he will soon be donning the hat of a director once again and there’s an announcement on our way. Well, Zoya Akhtar just dropped a surprise that Farhan will be directing a film based on travel but what’s interesting here is the fact that this time it’s a girl trip not the usual story of Bollywood wherein male protagonists take a road trip.
Jee Le Zaraa marks Farhan's directorial comeback after over a decade. The filmmaker last directed Shah Rukh Khan's Don 2 before shifting gears and pursuing acting. The film is written by Zoya Akhtar, Farhan Akhtar, and Reema Kagti; produced by Reema, Zoya, Ritesh Sidhwani, and Farhan. It is expected to release in 2023. Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Alia Bhatt, and Katrina Kaif are coming together for this big project.
Farhan also revealed that filming will begin in 2022. He wrote, “Did someone say road trip? Thrilled to announce my next film as director and what better day than 20 years of Dil Chahta Hai to do it. #JeeLeZaraa with @priyankachopra @katrinakaif @aliaabhatt will commence filming in 2022 and I cannot wait to get this show on the road.”
    Here’s the motion poster:

Farhan also shared an interesting video announcing this projected wherein he showed glimpses of Dil Chahta Hai and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and now, the narrative has changed because women are going on a trip.

People have mixed reactions to this announcement. Some are hyped up because finally the three are taking a trip and felt this change was much needed. A few are totally against the idea of such a movie as it lacks originality.

Amazon and one of the biggest Indian sellers on the platform, Cloudtail, have officially ended their relationship amidst regulation heat. The relationship ends due to years of opposition from mom and pop stores that Cloudtail got preferential treatment.
    © Reuters
Cloudtail was a venture between Amazon and India’s Catamaran that controlled the company which was due for renewal on May 19, 2022. The two companies said in a joint statement that they had mutually decided to part ways.

This could be a game-changer for Indian sellers on Amazon who were ignored by the e-commerce website for so long and gave preferential treatment to Cloudtail. A report by Reuters in February exposed that Amazon preferred Cloudtail over a small group of sellers according to internal documents. The report also alleged that Amazon used Cloudtail as a way to bypass Indian laws. Amazon says that it did not give Cloudtail preferential treatment or any seller for that matter and complies with local law.
There’s no doubt that Cloudtail’s presence on the e-commerce platform did hit hard smaller brick-and-mortar stores who wanted to sell their products on the platform. This may now change, and finally, give respite to smaller stores to have a fair chance at selling products on the marketplace and even compete fairly.
    © Reuters
Cloudtail was formed as a joint venture between Amazon and India’s most famous tech moguls, NR Narayana Murthy that began to offer goods and products on the website in August 2014. While Amazon said that Cloudtail was an independent seller publicly, internal documents revealed that the e-commerce giant wanted to expand the company and use it to circumvent the country’s foreign investment laws. The report triggered an investigation by anti-competition and anti-trust watchdogs which probably caused the split between the two companies.

    © Reuters
Arvind Singhal, chairman of retail consultancy Technopak Advisors, told Reuters “before it comes under more scrutiny, they are basically disengaging themselves. But given the relationship has been there for years, this will still hang as a sword on their heads.”

Amazon is also amidst talks with the parent company of Apparel to renew its joint venture next year according to Reuter’s sources. However, it is fair to say that for now multiple smaller retailers and sellers will likely take over Cloudtail’s share on Amazon in the coming months.
It is worth pointing out that Amazon and Walmart’s Flipkart will still have to face antitrust investigations as ordered by the Indian Supreme Court.

In the West, children move out of their homes as soon as they turn 18 and go off to college. For them, if you are still living with your parents when you are in your 20s, it means you have hit rock bottom.
However, in India, parents show their kids the movie Baghban every once in a while so that their children don't leave them alone, EVER or at least feel guilty about it.

However, once you move out of the house, you realise that your relationship with your parents actually gets better and it’s certainly beneficial for your personal growth.

You are forced to do your own chores, become financially independent and fight your own battles.

It’s a big scary world out there and living in a bubble wrap doesn’t help.

Desi young adults who moved out of their parents’ house and started living alone shared how it helped them to become more independent and responsible.
    © iStock
The Twitter discussion started when author Varun Mayya wrote, “Unpopular opinion: young adults should not be living with their parents or at least live outside for a few years. There’s immense value in learning how to do the dishes, wash your clothes and be responsible for yourself.”

    © iStock
People could relate and many shared how it was the best decision of their lives as well.

The greatest value is them learning to make their own decisions… and deal with the consequences. Where they go in life ultimately comes down to the decisions they make, and the judgement they develop. They can’t really build this skill in the parent “bubble wrap” zone at home.
    — Ajay Kumar (@ajakum) August 9, 2021100% on this, not just clothes and responsibility.
Living with my best friends, I've learnt about my flaws,

Through the next 3 months, I'll grow to form better relationships with them and others, which is really valuable to me.
    — Naman Hajela (@HajelaNaman) August 9, 2021However, there were some who opposed the idea and said that being independent and responsible has nothing to do with living alone. It comes from taking up house duties and skills that you learn in childhood.

    © iStock
Many argued that while women are taught house chores from a young age, men are not and that’s why they have to learn to be responsible once they don’t have their moms and sisters at their beck and call.

One shouldn't have to wait to do the dishes or wash clothes until moving out. These are everyday mundane tasks that keeps one's life comfortable, and hence needs to learn/taught to do from a young age.
    — Sandhya (@evevjn) August 9, 2021
However, adulting is not just about doing the dishes and paying your bills. Of course, you can learn to do these things while living with your parents.
It’s more about surviving the real world, discovering yourself and getting out of your comfort zone which is only possible when you live alone.
I would +1 @VarunMayya opinion. Have been away from parents during college days. Other than learning chores, being away helps you to identify yourself and also in becoming independent. You begin to see the world void of your parents influence and thus create a identity

On Monday, with the return of the Indian contingent from Tokyo Olympics 2020, also came back Ravi Dahiya, who bagged the silver medal in the men’s freestyle 57kg category as he went down fighting against Zavur Uguev of the Russian Olympic Committee in the final.
And while his disappointment of not bagging the top-spot at the podium became a huge talking point highlighting the athlete’s fighting spirit, a more controversial story had taken place during his semi-final clash against Kazakhstan's Nurislam Sanayev.
In the semi final, when Ravi Dahiya was pinning his opponent wrestler #NurislamSanayev he started biting on his arm.

    — KaviNeeraj (@kavi_neeraj) August 5, 2021
In the final moments of the match, the cameras had caught Dahiya’s opponent digging his teeth into the Indian athlete’s arm in desperation as he saw life getting squeezed out of him while being floored on the mat.
Once the match was over and the referee was all set to raise Dahiya’s arm to signal his victory, a massive and rather unnerving bite mark was visible on his right arm, which began to get highlighted on social media channels from the next moment onwards.

According to the rules framed by the world governing body UWW, the chapter Prohibition and Illegal Hold article 48 states that wrestlers are forbidden to pull the hair, ears, genitals, pinch the skin, bite, twist fingers or toes of their opponents. If found guilty, the wrestler can be penalised and even banned for participating in future events.
However, it was ruled that Sanayev’s bite was unintentional and therefore the Kazakh walked away with a loss but without any penalty.

Upon his arrival, Dahiya reveals to The Times of India how he dealt with his semi-final’s biting rival once the match was over:
“When I came for the weigh-in the next day, Sanayev was already there. He came and shook hands with me. I greeted him too because I had already forgotten everything. He hugged me and said – ‘sorry brother’. I smiled and hugged him back. We are friends. We also shared a few laughs on other topics,” the Olympic medallist said.

“I am happy with the silver medal, but I wanted to win the gold. Our wrestlers have won silver and bronze medals in the past and the only medal left to win was gold. I wanted to win that. For some time I was sad, but then I told myself that there will be the next time again for me,” Ravi Dahiya told TOI.
“I am promising this – I will win a gold medal in Paris. I am just 23 and have a lot left in me. After going home, I will spend some time with my family and then will start practicing and get back to my daily wrestling routine. Paris is my next target,” he added.

The Indian contingent at the Olympics went on to have their most successful run ever as they returned with seven medals wrapped around their necks. Out of these seven, one was a gold, two silvers and four bronze medals and it is a huge leap for sports in India no doubt.
The success of the Indian roster also enabled the champions of their respective fields like javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and weightlifter Mirabai Chanu to get exposed to an unprecedented level of fame and love from the fans.

As the final batch of Indian athletes returned home on Monday with a massive toli of fans ready to welcome them with garlands and proper bands, a discussion around the possibilities of adding cricket to the quadrennial tournament was touched upon by Jay Shah, who serves as the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Jay Shah (in Hindustan Times) confirmed that India will be participating if cricket is added to the Olympics.
    — Johns. (@CricCrazyJohns) August 9, 2021
“Once cricket is added in the Olympics, India will be participating,” Jay Shah was quoted by Hindustan Times. “The BCCI and the ICC are on the same page as far as participation in the Olympics is concerned.”
“The BCCI is more than happy to work together with the government and help increase India’s medal chances,” yet another BCCI official added to Shah’s agreement to having the Men in Blue participate in the grand sporting event.
Such a confirmation comes as a big surprise to the Indian cricket fans, especially since the Indian cricket board has been opposed to the thought of having their prestige players take part in an event in which cricket may not be the highlight and might get overshadowed by sports like Football and Tennis that enjoy a more global viewership and fan-following as compared to the game of bat and ball.
    View this post on Instagram
However, one of the biggest concerns, especially for the health of other sports and athletes in India is that if cricket manages to enter the realm of the Olympics, the rest of the athletes who take part in games like javelin throw, tracks, shooting, etc might lose out on the rare opportunities to gain popularity in the country which is completely focused on their cricketing squad all the time.
Here’s how the sports fans of India responded to the chances of having the Indian cricket team play at the 2028 Olympics which is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles, USA:
Adding cricket to Olympics will kill other sports. Olympic is the ultimate showcase for many sports, if cricket is added, the Indian crowd will stop supporting other sportsmen who rarely get noticed apart from when it is Olympics.
    — mAb Scientist (@Ab_Scientist) August 9, 2021Cricket have no chance Becoz it's take mostly time ever 3-4 hours
And cricket nothing played in big nation like America china and europe
    — omkarpathare256 (@omkarpathare256) August 9, 2021Good. Silver medal confirmed at least. Gold depends luck
    — Kartik Jayaraman (@elitecynic) August 10, 2021So our team won't be called chokers even after losing finals since it's still a silver medal. nice
    — Jay. (@peak_Ability18) August 9, 2021Cricket can't be added to Olympic. First very few countries play it at passable level. Second duration of Olympic have to be extended by another at least ten days to complete all games costing billions to host nation.

When Abhishek Bachchan made his debut with Kareena Kapoor in Refugee, the movie turned out to create an insane amount of buzz for various reasons. While it didn’t turn out to be a commercial success, although it had two big star kids and a beautiful music album, it ended up making a mark for itself. Abhishek Bachchcan got a lot of appreciation for this unusual debut which didn’t involve him dancing around the trees and the broody nature of his character was well essayed.

However, not many people know that Abhishek’s original debut was not this big project but he was originally supposed to be launched by Rang De Basanti director Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra. The movie was titled Samjhauta Express and he was supposed to play the role of a Pakistani terrorist.
The director opened up in his book The Stranger In The Mirror, where he explicitly explained how mentally draining it ended up being for him. Apparently, he got a call from Abhishek’s mother Jaya Bachchan who informed him that he was working in Refugee.
“I understood the decision (Abhishek's) rationally. My script involved Abhishek playing a Pakistan-sponsored terrorist in his first film, which was against the grain of how Indian audiences perceive their hero... I couldn't help but wonder: what is the right launch pad for an actor with a gargantuan legacy like Abhishek?” he said.
However, all was well eventually between them because the duo eventually worked together in Delhi 6.” ...for me, Delhi-6 is and will remain the closest to my heart. And because as a script, it was the first that took shape within me and stayed dormant for a very long time inside my consciousness...I knew if I had to keep making great cinema, I would need a solid footing in picking the right kind of story. My movies had to have a voice. And I wanted to tackle sensitive subjects and make cinema that had a soul. The message of Delhi-6 is bigger than any individual. Deep within, I felt validated and I knew why I had been chosen by the universe to make movies. Today, the movie has become even more relevant than ever before", he exclaimed.
    © Twitter
Rakeysh was crestfallen after he realised that the movie couldn’t be made and so he burnt the script and his research work in a barbeque stove on his terrace. He is a phenomenal director and his storytelling is extremely passionate, so this movie would have been extremely interesting. However, we hope that maybe he can reprise the script in accordance with the demands of the story and probably work on it again.
