Milkha Singh, PT Usha, Anju Bobby Geroge, they all represented India in different Olympic events but have one thing in common. They all came close to winning an Olympic medal but fell agonisingly short, losing on to a podium finish by a whisker.

After a series of heartbreaks and decades of drought, the moment has finally arrived when a track and field athlete from Indian could call himself an Olympic champion and this long-standing dream has been turned into reality by star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who struck gold by hurling his javelin at a distance 87.58m, giving Indian its moment of glory that millions of Indians have been waiting for since ages.

With this triumph, Neeraj became only the second Indian athlete to win an individual Olympic gold medal, joining shooter Abhinav Bindra in the elite club who had won a gold in 10-meter air rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Delighted with Neeraj’s achievement, Bindra was among the first persons to congratulate the 23-year-old athlete from Haryana on the micro-blogging site.
And Gold it is for @Neeraj_chopra1 .Take a bow, young man ! You have fulfilled a nation's dream. Thank you!
Also, welcome to the club - a much needed addition! Extremely proud. I am so delighted for you.

As the country celebrated the historic achievement, the social media platform was flooded with congratulatory messages. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said history has been created in Tokyo and his achievement will be cherished forever by each and every Indian.

    — Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) August 7, 2021 Neeraj’s golden moment has made Tokyo 2020 India’s best-ever performance at an Olympic event as they finished with seven medals, overhauling six medals that Indian athletes won at the 2012 London Games.
Earlier in the day, wrestler Bajrang Punia gave India their sixth medal at Tokyo Olympics as he defeated Kazakhstan’s Daulet Niyazbekov 8-0 to clinch the bronze medal in the 65kg freestyle event.

A day after he was accused of discriminating against fast bowler Kagiso Rabada on racial grounds, former South Africa captain and Royal Challenger Bangalore superstar AB de Villiers has faced another huge allegation, with a fellow batsman blaming him for blocking his selection during India’s tour of 2015.
Khaya Zondo was part of South Africa’s squad that toured India way back in 2015 but couldn’t break into the Playing XI of the series-deciding fifth and final ODI in Mumbai. By blaming one of the most popular cricketers for keeping him out of the side at all cost, he has shocked the whole cricket fraternity.

Zondo said that the former Proteas skipper was his childhood hero and was someone he would look up to growing up, with a dream of representing his country one day.

The 31-year-old batsman made these accusations while presenting his testimony during a Social Justice and Nation Building (SJN) hearing which took place on July 22 and was made public on Friday.
Zondo said what surprised him the most was the fact that after blocking his selection, de Villiers even tried to justify his selection and expected him to understand his thought process.

“The captain (de Villiers) called me over to the side, away from the rest of the team and mentioned to me he was the one who felt I should not play. He was trying to explain himself and he was taking full responsibility for the decision,” Zondo said, during the hearing.

“I remember in the moment of him explaining himself to me, losing all respect for him as a captain, and as someone I looked up to as a cricketing hero of mine because I could not believe this guy was trying to justify himself to me, and it came across as if I should accept this decision because the decision came from him.
“I switched off mentally for the rest of the day and I detached myself from the team because it was clear I was not wanted,” he added.
“Switching off helped me cope with everything that was happening. The hardest part was watching the players who were selected ahead of me playing and having the opportunity to shine for South Africa on a world stage, in India and having a chance to play and potentially impress and get future IPL opportunities,” said Zondo, explaining how the incident affected him.

After being denied a debut on the 2015 tour, Zondo would go on to make his ODI debut three years later in 2018 and could only represent South Africa in five 50-over matches.

Earlier this week, former South Africa selector Hussein Manack had accused de Villiers of leaving fast bowler Kagiso Rabada on racial grounds, something which he has categorically denied describing all such claims as “ridiculous”.
“I have never wanted KG dropped from any team at any time. The idea is ridiculous. He is one of the finest bowlers in world cricket,” de Villiers was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

The moment the entire country has been waiting for, for 13 long years, is finally here. The last time we felt this level of exhilaration as a country, was when Abhinav Bindra shot his way to the gold medal, at Beijing Olympics in 2008. India has finally broken its 13 year old gold drought, through its newest superstar javelin thrower, Neeraj Chopra's monstrous throw.

Neeraj made headlines last week after he settled on top of the table, with a mega-throw that scored an impressive 86.65 m on the board. Today, he surpassed that with a massive 87.58 m, that no one else was able to match.

Both the silver and bronze were won by Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch (86.67m) and Vesely Vitezslav (85.44m), who gave a tough fight. Jakub had Indians gasping for breath at one point, but Neeraj ultimately proved too good to be touched.

All eyes were on Neeraj Chopra for obvious reasons, however, Pakistan also was an unlikely contender because of star thrower Arshad Nadeem, who scored impressively in group B last week. He also mentioned that he looks up to Neeraj as his 'hero', and shared the prestigious medal stage with him during Asian Games.

What makes this gold special, apart from the obvious reasons, is the fact that this is the first gold medal in athletics for India after almost 100 years. While India started slow this Olympics, with a lot of narrowly missed medals, Neeraj's gold will surely give the entire country the much needed reason to truly rejoice, and feel like a champion.

Conceding runs at the hands of opposition’s tail-enders is perhaps the most annoying thing for any bowler and this frustration was visible on the faces of England fast bowlers on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test against at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

Indian tail-enders, especially Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, batted superbly to add crucial runs down the order, propelling India to a healthy first-innings lead. The longer they stayed at the crease, England bowlers started losing their cool and tried to get under the skin of Indian batters by sledging them.

However, the move didn’t yield any result, all it did was motivate Indian batters to spend even more time in the middle. Watching others score runs, Mohammad Siraj, India’s No. 11 batsman, also tried to free his arms against none other than James Anderson, England’s all-time leading wicket-taker in the longest format. He swung the bat hard but missed the ball completely, which Anderson didn’t like at all and he said a few words to him to rile him up.

In his short Test career, one thing that Siraj has established is that he is not someone who gets flustered by such altercations. In fact, he loves to give it back to the opponent and he did exactly that. As Anderson was walking back to his bowling mark, Siraj stood firm and clashed shoulders as he crossed path on his way to the batting crease and even gave him a stern look.

This incident took place after the completion of the 84th over of the innings and in the next over India were bowled out but they had already taken a vital 95-run lead.
    Shami - 13
    Bumrah - 28
    Siraj - 7

    — Anurag Sinha (@anuragsinha1992) August 6, 2021 As Jasprit Bumrah was going hard from the other end, Siraj played sensibly and gave him as much strike as possible and walked back to the pavilion unbeaten, which showed that the sledging had no effect on him.
The rain interrupted the play for the second day running and only 11.1 overs could be bowled in England’s second innings. The hosts were 25 for no loss, trailing India by 70 runs, when the play was abandoned due to bad weather on Day 2.
