Not so long ago, the F&B industry had seemed stagnant, dominated by existing restaurant brands and their monopoly over customers.
Then came Zomato. An app that revolutionized the way Indians (and now the rest of the world too) related to their food.
Deepinder Goyal, the founder of Zomato knew what he was doing when he came up with FoodieBay, the company that would later be rechristened to Zomato.

Buoyed by Zomato’s promising ecosystem, several new restaurants and service providers entered the market, changing the entire landscape of the Food and Beverage industry in India.

Deepinder Goyal was a man on a mission, and that is evident with Zomato finally earning the billion-dollar company status.
But how did he get here? Was he born a visionary or did circumstances mould him to be so?
    Quiet Beginnings  © Deepinder Goyal
Deepinder Goyal comes from humble beginnings, born in Muktsar in 1983, a small town in Punjab. His father taught at a government school.

    Real Fear  © Deepinder Goyal
Deepinder isn't a name that commonly precedes the Goyal surname. It’s a traditionally Sikh name that stuck with him as his family used to live in fear of terrorists.

His parents taught him to claim to be a Sikh as it would have been safer for a young Deepinder, even if his parents would have been killed. Such times can gravely impact an impressionable child.

He moved to Chandigarh at the age of 15 to study for the final two years of school. Since he was living away from his parents, he ended up living in a hostel.

Getting ragged became a part of his life, even though it was tough, he found a way to survive and not give up hope.

He was out of his depth, academically. His move to the new school had been difficult due to a higher standard of studying than he was used to.

However, he stiffened up his upper lip, focused his best and managed to clear the IIT entrance examination.

After graduating from IIT with a Mathematics and Computing Degree, he ended up joining Bani & Company.

At Bain, he came up with the idea of an online restaurant information system after observing his colleague’s food habits. There would be menu cards flying around everywhere.
    6. FoodieBay to ZomatoIn 2008, he left Bain to start Foodiebay. At that time, he used to work out of his apartment, focusing especially on strategy and product development.
FoodieBay would later be renamed, Zomato.

Deepinder Goyal’s story is one of pure inspiration and hard work. It’s a tale where an ordinary Indian, the son of a school teacher goes on to forge an unimaginable legacy.
The Zomato founder reminds us that success isn’t an overnight journey, but often a far-sighted vision.
It’s on us to keep our eyes on the prize.

Many industries came to a standstill amid the pandemic in 2020, and many people lost their jobs too. While it became a difficult time for survival, Ronit Roy too recently opened up about losing work due to the covid-19 situation.

But, during the pandemic, Ronit's agency suffered, and he considered shutting it down. Instead, he kept his employees on payrolls as they needed funds to run their families. The actor also shared that the only people from the industry who came forward to help him were Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar.

Speaking to ETimes, Ronit said that the COVID situation indefinitely affected his business. "Post lockdown in March 2020, I decided to shut down my security agency. My wife Neelam and I sat down and realised that there was a lot happening; some worker's wife was pregnant, someone's mother was unwell. I decided to keep them on the roster. As for my clients, the so-called stars, they went away. Only a few, in fact, just two - Mr Bachchan and Akshay Kumar - stood by me in the lockdown and I am very grateful to them."

When asked about the clients who worked with him, he said, "Those clients cannot be short on money. A few of them decided to approach and come back to me, but I refused to work with them."

Okay, I’ll be honest here. For a long long time, everything that I knew about love, romance and chivalry was from Bollywood movies. Everything from how it must feel when you’re in love, to what you should say, how you must react was all inspired by my favourite actors and actresses on screen.
And while I was kind of grateful to Bollywood films for turning me into this hopeless romantic, I realised much later on in my life, how, along the way, it also taught me a few things I wish I’d be able to unlearn.

You see, in a bid to create impactful, dramatic and larger than life films, Bollywood would often end up romanticising way more than the feeling of love.

It would implicitly promote a number of problematic things that managed to stick with the audiences and create a culture of toxicity.
Which is why, Bollywood needs to immediately stop romanticizing these things:
    1. Teacher-Student Love Stories © Red Chillies Entertainment
The thing about movies is, they stick. Especially in the minds of young and impressionable people, for whom watching movies where Shah Rukh Khan is trying to propose to his teacher in the middle of a classroom is something to take inspiration from.

This is how suddenly a minor may start developing feelings for his teacher and god knows that isn’t just problematic but also might land both - the kid and the teacher in a lot of trouble.
    2. Not Taking 'No' For An Answer. Ever © Color Yellow Productions
When W. E Hickson said, ‘try try till you succeed’, he certainly didn’t mean for anyone to pester or strong-arm someone into saying ‘yes’. But I guess, our society and well, Bollywood chose to make their own interpretation out of it for there is no movie where the hero doesn’t move mountains pursuing the girl.

Bollywood really needs to stop romanticising the chase because if anything, it is making it harder for people to understand that a ‘no’ means ‘no’.
    3. Pursuing Someone Already In A Relationship © Dharma Productions
The problem with this is, that it makes people believe it is okay to hit on men or women while they’re still with someone else. It’s not just wrong on a moral and an ethical level, but it also disrespects boundaries.

And no matter how cruel or mismatched the existing partner of the protagonist may be, promoting going after someone’s girl or a guy is simply not cool.
    4. Cheating © Dharma Productions
The final nail in the coffin for any relationship, that has somehow turned into a breeding ground for new relationships, thanks to Bollywood.

Because every time a movie is made about how two people cheated on their partners, cried for a song and then got their happily ever after, it undermines the very foundation of relationships, which is trust.
And not to forget, it gets the message across that somehow, it is okay to cheat on your partners and justify it with a few tears. Well, guess what? It’s not.
    5. Resolving Conflict With An Unannounced Kiss © Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment
No matter how romantic and intense it may seem on the screen, when in reality, someone were to kiss you mid-sentence or mid-argument, trust me your impulse wouldn’t be to kiss back. Because not only is it not the time, the place or the moment but also there is no consent.

You can’t resolve fights by sneaking in a kiss or forcing a make-out. You resolve fights by communicating, accepting mistakes and making amends. Something that Bollywood should actually show, instead of random kisses.
    6. First Time *** Is Fantastic © SLB Films
Alright, here is the truth - it’s not. Not for the girl, not for the boy, not for anyone. What it is, is sloppy, awkward, painful and very unsettling. At least for the first few minutes.

Which is why, when Bollywood insinuates how first *** is nothing short of a euphoric release, it sets the wrong standards to measure your own *** life by.
    7. Using Violence And Abuse To Show Love © T Series
Movies like Kabir Singh have taken quite the credit for propagating such toxicity in relationships wherein either of the partner thinks it is okay to abuse or belittle the other for according to them, they were doing it out of love.

Let me tell you something, the only thing that is justified doing out of love is actually love. Anything other than that stems from another emotion and if your instinct is to hit your loved one, clearly, you need a psychiatrist and not a Bollywood movie out of it.

We have often seen old videos resurfacing on the internet. These throwback times garner many views in no time, especially if it has our favourite celebrities or cricketers. Virat Kohli is one of them. Being an eminent personality on the field, the skipper has never failed to steal our attention.

Virat said, "We were waiting at the airport. I was getting very bored at that time. I thought let's see something on mobile. It was too late, there was some problem with the bags. I didn't know, the wifi at the airport wasn't on. So I switched to my India's 3G cellular network. And for about one hour I watched Comedy Nights on international roaming."

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, despite retiring from international cricket, hasn’t seen a dip in his popularity and he continues to rule billions of hearts. But unlike most celebrities, Dhoni likes to live his life in peace with his family members, away from all the limelight, and perhaps explains the reason why he isn’t that active on social media.
For a brief period on Friday, Dhoni lost the blue tick on his official Twitter handle and many started speculating that it was done due to his inactivity on the platform, with his last tweet dating back to January 8, 2021 and the one before that was from September 10, 2020.

Whatever the reason may be, it was enough to start a huge campaign against the social media giants by his passionate supporters -- also known as ‘Thala Army’ which forced them to restore the verified badge of the former Indian skipper’s account.

While there has been no official communication as to why the blue tick was removed from MS Dhoni’s Twitter account, which has a massive following of 8.2 million people, people started taking guesses that it was perhaps because he hadn't logged into his account for over six months and in doing so had violated the rules of Twitter’s verification policy which requires a user to remain active, among other things.

As per Twitter’s official website, blue ticks are given to accounts of public interest which proved their authenticity. It also states that to be eligible for a blue verified badge “your account must be authentic, notable, and active”.

“The blue verified badge on Twitter lets people know that an account of public interest is authentic. To receive the blue badge, your account must be authentic, notable, and active,” reads a statement on Twitter’s official website.

After a huge uproar on social media, the micro-blogging site was forced to restore the blue tick and they also issued a statement revealing the reason why the decision was taken. The incident was enough to prove the power of Thala fans, who pressurized the Silicon Valley giants to step back and restore the blue tick on CSK skipper’s account that too within a matter of hours.

    — Priyam Agrawal (@facepriyam) August 6, 2021 "The verified badge of MS Dhoni's Twitter account has been restored. The referenced account has been inactive since February 2021,” a Twitter spokesperson was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
"As explained in the Twitter verification policy, Twitter may automatically remove the blue verified badge and verified status if the account becomes inactive or is incomplete. Inactivity is based on logging in. To keep the account active, the account holder must make sure to log in at least every 6 months," the spokesperson added.

In India where celebrities are treated like demi-gods, an organisation like Twitter should have known the repercussions they would face on their own platform by making such a bold move against one of the most loved cricketers in the country. Hope they have learnt their lessons!
