    The sudden and rather controversial death of Princess Diana came as a shock for a lot of people in 1997. However, it was Prince Harry who was the most devastated. So much so, that he actually tried finding solace and peace in alcohol and drugs.

    In a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey for a new show on Apple TV, where she discusses mental health with notable celebrities, Prince Harry made this startling revelation. 

    He also said that because of his royal life, and the duties that he had to perform as a member of the family, he has had to deal with anxiety and panic attacks during his late 20s and early 30s.

    Prince Harry was 12 years old in 1997, the year when Princess Diana met that fateful accident in Paris that would end her life. In the interview with Oprah, Harry spoke about the loss of his mother and how he has dealt with the loss over the years.

    He said that in the years to follow, only a few people around him ever discussed her untimely and sudden death, which took a massive toll on him.

    Speaking about alcoholism in early people with mental health issues, the prince said that he would often drink a week’s worth of alcohol in one day of the weekend, to feel numb. 
    “I would find myself drinking not because I was enjoying it but because I was trying to mask something.”

    He also said that during this phase, he was open to anything and everything that would help him numb himself. 

    “I was willing to drink, I was willing to take drugs," he said, adding: "I was willing to try and do the things that made me feel less like I was feeling.”

    Earlier this year, Meghan Markle & Prince Harry appeared in a special episode of Oprah’s show, where they revealed how the Royal Family treated the both of them, especially Meghan as an outsider, and how certain actions by certain high ranking members of the family were just toxic.

    This was the reason, “the role destroying their mental health” that the two of them finally abdicated their positions as royals in 2020 and moved away from the royal family.

    This just goes on to show, that mental health issues do not see your social status, your bank balance, or just how famous you are.  

    This is why we should be engaged constantly in making safe spaces for our loved ones, and encourage them to open up about things that are disturbing them, deep down inside.  
    It is actually quite refreshing and encouraging to see someone like Prince Harry, shedding his inhibitions, and facing his demons, in such a public manner.
