The Indian Premier League has come to an abrupt pause with the numbers of COVID-19 cases on the rise at a nerve wracking rate in the country and the bio-bubble provided by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) deemed unsafe after various players were tested positive despite strict protocol.
Under such circumstances, while the Indian players did not find it difficult to return to their homes in less than a day’s time, it was the overseas players who found themselves in the middle of a very peculiar predicament.
After nine straight days of 300,000+ Covid cases daily, India has now moved 400,00+. The US has banned travel from India; Australia will jail for 5 years if someone arrives from India. Only 7million had gone to Haridwar's Kumbh Mela in Apil to take a dip in the Ganges.

International players, especially the Australian athletes experienced exodus after their own government banned them from returning home within 14 days of being in India.
The lack of direct flights to other countries at the time of the most devastating COVID-19 wave this world has ever seen, also made it significantly tough for the athletes, commentators and coaching staff members to travel back home.
Cricket Australia CEO: been working with BCCI/IPL to repatriate plyrs, suppt staff, umpires, commentators "as quickly and safely as possible" out of India.

Range of options: Maldives or Sri Lanka

On Wednesday, the BCCI confirmed that they are trying their best to help out the overseas stars and had planned to transport them to either Sri Lanka or the Maldives where they can undergo the 14-day mandatory quarantine tenure before taking a flight to their country.
It was at this point that the most successful franchise in the history of the league, the Mumbai Indians stepped up and lived up to their name and volunteered to offer multiple chartered planes flying to the nations such as New Zealand, South Africa and the Carribean in order to help their players reach their families safely.
According to Cricbuzz, Mumbai Indians are sending their overseas players via Chartered plane and they also offered other franchise players to join them.

The five-time champions have also extended their invite to the rest of the seven franchises of the league to have their players get a spot on these chartered planes and travel with the rest of the contingents in peace.
However, since the Mumbai Indians do not have any England cricketers in their roster, no chartered flights are being directed towards the United Kingdom as of now.
“Following the postponement of IPL 2021, we are in close contact with our players and staff in India as arrangements are put in place for them to return home safely. The ECB understands the BCCI’s decision to postpone the competition for the safety and wellbeing of those involved, and thanks the BCCI for its commitment to do everything in its powers to arrange for the secure and safe passage of all those taking part in the competition. Our thoughts remain with the people of India during these challenging times,” the England and Wales Cricket Board said in a statement.
